The strength of Survivor Blood vs. Water has given the show strong ratings that are leaving it as the number two reality show in the country, behind only The Voice , which airs on different nights. Survivor is far, far ahead of its timeslot competition, Fox’s The X Factor , which airs at the same time, and is, of course, terrifyingly bad. CBS said in a press release today that the show “delivered its largest audience of the season” with “10.18 million viewers”; it also had a 2.5 among adults 18 to 49. In final ratings, Survivor almost doubled the viewers who watched Simon Cowell’s lousy show, which had 5.51 million viewers and a 1.7 in 18-49, although the numbers for X Factor are its ratings across its entire two hours, and at 9 p.m., it had even stronger competition from Criminal Minds and Modern Family. Elan Gale, a producer on ABC’s The Bachelor , had a note-passing battle with a fellow passenger on a Thanksgiving Day US Airways flight, and it went viral over the holiday weekend, especially after Buzzfeed collected all of his tweets from the flight. The fight began when Gale sent her a note and a glass of wine because she was complaining repeatedly to airline staff about the flight’s delay, insisting she was more important than others. According to his tweets, a flight attendant told the passenger, “‘I understand ma’am. I’m looking forward to seeing my family too.’ She responded ‘This isn’t about you.’” Gale’s tweets included photos of the notes he sent to the woman, one of which said, “I hate you very much. Eat my dick.” After the plane landed, she slapped him. Gale later wrote on Tumblr, “I know I can come across as abrasive. I know I can seem harsh. A new Funny or Die video starring George Takei as the host of a gay version of ABC’s The Bachelor offers a somewhat convincing, if stereotype-ridden and totally jokey, argument as to why a gay season of the show might not work structurally. Duck Dynasty has become a ratings winner for A&E, and judging by all the products the network now sells—among other things, there’s a board game, cookbook, and brand-new Christmas album—it’s also doing well generating cash outside of advertisements. In a press release announcing the Duck Dynasty seasons 1 to 3 “collector’s set,” out Dec. 3, Lionsgate Home Entertainment said in a press release that it is “the most successful TV-on-DVD franchise of the year, with over 2.5 million copies sold.” But it’s a special Christmas DVD released earlier this month that may be the most blatant attempt to squeeze cash out of their scripted antics. After writing that there are “questions unanswered about Diane,” he promised “I will post the photo and hopefully we can resolve all this.” The photo he eventually posted was of an empty chair, and was captioned “Here is Diana sitting in a chair” (“Diana” was an ironic typo). The evil geniuses at Bravo are using a Facebook product to “scan private posts” of “100 million U.S. users, anonymously combining those into useful data about who’s talking about a specific topic,” Variety reports. Note how this new Facebook service uses private posts, not just public ones (although some people don’t seem to know what they share publicly on social media.) That CBS’ promotion for upcoming episodes of Survivor have been getting increasingly spoiler-filled and desperate is obvious. However, the preview for Wednesday’s episode essentially reveals every major thing that happens in the episode, but gives away what would have otherwise been a shocking moment that makes Survivor history. The preview—which is not the “next time on Survivor” promo from last week’s episode, but instead one that rat on television during football—immediately shows Jeff Probst revealing the results of the Tribal Council vote. The scene at Tribal Council also shows the jury, briefly but clearly revealing the loser of the Redemption Island duel challenge. Slightly less obvious is the person who is wearing the immunity idol necklace, though by process of elimination and/or freeze-frame that appears to be visible, too. There were two fatal shootings at separate bars featured on Spike’s Bar Rescue early Saturday, including one that involved the owner of a bar that was to be featured on Sunday’s brand-new episode. Spike pulled the episode but later apologized for failing to pull repeats of the episode. Country singer Wayne Mills was shot dead by Pit and Barrell owner Chris Ferrell, who “told police he shot Mills in self-defense following an argument over Mills smoking in the bar,” The Tennessean reports. Spike apologized for airing the episode; it pulled the original broadcast of the episode, “Music City Mess,” but failed to pull repeats. Irene McGee is best known for her 1998 exit from The Real World Seattle : Citing her Lyme disease as the reason, she leaves the show, only to be hit in the face by a fellow cast member, Stephen, as cameras rolled. Now, 15 years later, Irene tells the story of her time on the series—not just of that moment, but of her disaffection with the production, which is the real reason why she left. It’s a must-read essay. Wednesday’s episode of Survivor was a mix of frustration and awesomeness. Guess who was the source of the frustration, like gravy dribbling off the mashed potatoes and getting all up in the cranberries? (Yes, Jeff Probst.) I was convinced for a long time that Ciera’s confession to Tyson was part of her plan with Caleb and Hayden: make Tyson think he’s safe. And I also felt like if anyone was being played, it was going to be Tyson, but I suppose I was a victim of the editing and last week’s preview, which set up that Tyson was in trouble. (So, too, does next week’s preview.) Up until Tribal, Ciera’s plan seemed to be unraveling, but in fact she remained in a very powerful position the whole time. Even when Hayden and Caleb confronted Tyson, they became the targets by exposing their insecurity. The only son of Survivor Australia winner Tina Wesson, and the brother of Survivor Blood vs. Water contestant Katie Collins, died in a car accident this morning, according to a news station. Taylor was 25. Knoxville CBS affiliate reporter Lauren Davis reported on Twitter that the “25 yo son of local Survivor star Tina Wesson dies in car wreck this morning in Chattanooga.” There were no other details, but Davis’ tweet teased a report during the 4 p.m. newscast about his death. Yesterday, Tina referenced him in a tweet, misreading another user’s tweet as being about that person’s five brothers. Tina wrote, “5 brothers! ABC’s Dancing with the Stars was cut from two episodes a week to one for its 17th season, a change that seriously hurt Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance . But improbably for a series that has always skewed old, both in its ratings and presentation, the show has improved significantly this season, and no longer seems like a show most suited to be shown on retirement home rec room televisions. Some of these changes may have been introduced or tried earlier, and I admit that I have not watched every episode of every season, because I get bored easily. Other changes were probably forced or inspired by the shift to one episode a week. But the combination of these seven things is really working: Casting.
