Besides launching a daytime talk show and hosting two more seasons of Survivor, Jeff Probst will direct his second feature film. His first, Finder’s Fee ( rent and watch for $3 ), was critically acclaimed . His new film is Kiss Me, which Variety describes as a film about “a teenage girl through the physical and emotional growing pains of adolescence.” It was written by Deadwood and Lost writer Liz Sarnoff and stars John Corbett and Sarah Bolger. Production begins in February. Assuming Survivor’s 25th season is filmed in March and April , as previously announced, that means it will be a quick production, and post-production might have to wait until after Probst returns, unless he does that on location. Survivor host Jeff Probst has gotten married to someone named Russell, but it is not, thankfully, Russell Hantz, even though Probst’s love for the man is never-ending . The marriage was actually between Probst and Lisa Ann Russell, an actor who was previously married to Mark-Paul Gosselaar. They were married Tuesday, People reports , calling it “an intimate ceremony at a private Los Angeles residence.” The magazine has a photo of the couple looking very happy. Survivor host and executive producer Jeff Probst thinks that nice doesn’t work on the CBS reality show, because the most entertaining characters are “evil” and “immoral” people such as Parvati Shallow (!), Russell Hantz, and Boston Rob Mariano. Survivor South Pacific might seem nearly identical to last season on paper—returning players, a Hantz, Redemption Island, Samoa—but there’s a significant and long-overdue change: the first immunity challenge does not conclude with a puzzle. Also, Jeff Probst finally admits Tribal Council is all about him. First, puzzle equalizers have been featured for years now, and while not on every challenge, they usually end obstacle course-style challenges. CBS has officially renewed Survivor for its 23rd and 24th seasons, and Jeff Probst will return as its host and executive producer. The renewal isn’t a surprise, because it does well even though the show is now getting beaten by American Idol. The announcement says it “continues to perform strongly opposite ‘American Idol,’ averaging 11.70 million viewers.” Perhaps the biggest variable was Jeff Probst, who has been renewing his contract in one-year increments and has been somewhat coy about whether he’s coming back or not. Last year, the network announced the renewal of the show a few weeks before he signed on as host, prompting me to suggest Conan O’Brien as a host in case he didn’t renew. The well-written open letter was posted by beatles20147 and lacks the vitriol that is sometimes present in Sucks threads. Russell Hantz’s elimination last night was awesome and remarkable—it’s the first time he’s been voted out, and it may end his streak of being on every single episode of three of the last four seasons—but Survivor Redemption Island host Jeff Probst has gone far, comparing the moment to the moon landing. There was so much in episode one of Survivor Redemption Island that it is absolutely worth a second viewing, and a lot of it was just absurd and comic, like the way Phillip was identified as a “Former Federal Agent?”, question mark included. But there was at least one hilariously weird thing that happened off camera before the show started: Jeff Probst performed Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for the contestants, and promises its lyrics will show up in his descriptions of duel challenges. Ever since Regis Philbin announced he was retiring from Live with Regis and Kelly, Jeff Probst has been mentioned as a possible replacement, which makes sense because he’s a frequent fill-in host. But Jeff says he will not take that job, but not just because of Survivor; it’s also because he doesn’t want to move to New York City. Survivor host Jeff Probst has bought a famous house for $5 million: it’s Gene Autry’s Studio City estate. Jeff paid $5 million, a good deal since it went on the market at $6.9 million last summer. The Los Angeles Times reports that the 3.68-acre property is a “two-story Monterey-style house of about 8,000 square feet [that] has pegged hardwood floors, a family room with a wet bar, a library/media room with vintage walnut paneling, a breakfast room, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Balconies overlook the acreage, which has winding paths and flower gardens. CBS has posted a video of Jeff Probst evaluating the Survivor Redemption Island cast. Because it seems like this was filmed before the first Tribal Council, it’s his actual pre-game assessment of their potential rather than mid-season pretend assessment of their potential, which is interesting. It also manages to make the cast seem more interesting than they did when it was announced, and so many of them seemed like copies of previous seasons’ contestants. Jeff’s analysis, which is interspersed with footage of the contestants goofing off around the pool at what I presume is Ponderosa, falls apart a little at the end when he calls Russell Hantz and Rob Mariano “icons on our show,” and worse, says that “nobody has had two alliances go all the way to the end like Russell has.” (Um, what? Jeff Probst basically tried to tell tribe members how to vote on Survivor Nicaragua this week, which is all the evidence even a casual viewer needs as proof that this season isn’t going to rank among the best ever. But Jeff is always honest, and though he hedges a bit, he basically admits this season sucks—which we could have guessed since he didn’t spend pre-season interviews talking about how great this season would be. “You can’t judge a season until it’s over because if it ends well, then that will make a big difference. In terms of game play, Survivor Nicaragua is a black hole of despair. In terms of entertainment, this 21st season has its moments, and tonight was full of a lot of those moments, however full of absolute stupidity they were. Even Jeff Probst basically telling people how to vote so they would least attempt something resembling a strategy couldn’t get the final six to pull their heads out of their asses, which was enough to distract us from Jeff’s extraordinary overreaching (“here, vote like this, it will be more interesting”). I don’t think voting out Jane was a bad move; she’s tough, she wins challenges, and everyone likes her. She’d dance off to North Carolina with that $1 million, so it makes sense that her alliance—Chase, Sash, and Holly—would turn on her. I cannot recall a conversation in the show’s 10-year history that was quite like the one we saw when they told her they were voting her out.
