On its anniversary, I explained why it still matters , but didn’t focus on one thing that was especially important: character. And though everyone that first season was an amazing character, you can pretty much sum that up with Richard Hatch sitting in a tree. Greg wrote in (you can still contribute ), suggesting that day one be “Richard Hatch in a Bare Tree,” and that was too perfect. Watching Richard Hatch perched above his tribe as they argued about what to do first at camp was such an incredible moment, one that became more meaningful after he won, but is even more meaningful now. Remember Dr. Sean voting in season one by choosing people’s names alphabetically? Instead, it’s the stand-out moment from the short-lived but awesome 2005 Bravo series Showdog Moms and Dads , one of the best shows that year . All you really need, though, are these words: “He bite me in my vagina.” The broken English contributes to the humor, but it’s mostly the absurdity of the statement, and that the words were spoken by a nameless, non-cast member, just a random woman with a vicious little dog. We see the aftermath of the dog biting a man, and the dog’s owner gives increasingly desperate defenses of her evil little dog. “In my vagina two times, he bite me,” she says, going on to explain that he likes biting other genitalia, too. The Daily Beast has compiled a list of the 10 highest-paid reality stars , or at least those people who earn money only because they are famous. The list is lead by, surprise, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians brood; Kim Kardashian tops the list, and is followed by Lauren Conrad and The Real Housewives’ Bethenny Frankel. As entertaining and awesome as completely constructed reality shows can be, some of the best reality shows are just edited versions of a reality that would exist even if cameras weren’t there. Deadliest Catch remains the best example of this, as it proved earlier this year with its episode about Phil Harris’ death . Executive producer Thom Beers created and defined a subgenre with the show, and followed it with similar series, from Ice Road Truckers to Black Gold , that have had varying degrees of success. And certainly other shows such as Whale Wars owe something to the show, which is why it’s a gift worth celebrating during the 12 Days of Reality TV. The best of those shows and Deadliest Catch offer us access to something we’d probably never see otherwise thanks to their access, never mind the bravery and craftsmanship of the people who actually film the show and are standing on the freezing deck of a crab boat for hours and hours. Most recently, she produced Jeff Probst’s reality series pilot Life for the Moment ; NBC’s School Pride , which concludes this Friday; and ABC’s True Beauty . Posts on Facebook and messages on Twitter written by friends and colleagues say she died yesterday, Tuesday. Many people have posted messages on her Facebook wall about her death, while actor Marlee Matlin, who appeared on the ABC makeover show, wrote on Twitter , “So sad to hear of the passing of Denise Cramsey. Starting tonight, Sundance Channel will air The Comeback , a fantastic but one-season HBO series starring Lisa Kudrow as a has-been actress who’s being filmed for a reality show. Presented as unedited footage from the reality series, The Comeback is an incredible send-up and satire of reality TV and so much more, as we follow Kudrow’s character, Valerie Cherish. The 2005 series was produced and written by Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King, and although his more-famous series—never mind those crap-ass movies—may have had deeper penetration into pop culture, but The Comeback is near perfect. The narrative arc builds over the season explores both fame and the construction of reality TV, and it’s never really predictable, but always engaging.
