It’s nearly the end of 2011, and thus I’m required by media law to recap the previous year. In reality television, it was a year of ups and downs, as usual, from Jesus’ active involvement in Survivor to revealing behind-the-scenes moment Recapping the year is an exhausting, daunting challenge, however (and something I just don’t have time for this year, for reasons that will become obvious shortly). That’s in part because I have a terrible memory, but even reviewing just my posts isn’t comprehensive, because I don’t write about every moment on every show. The History Channel’s reality shows have propelled the network to become the fifth-most popular network on cable, behind only USA, Disney, TNT, and ESPN; last year, it was number eight. Pawn Stars , which is getting a spin-off, is largely responsible for that growth. While the network is planning to air some scripted shows, its brand of reality TV—including Top Shot —has now made it more popular than any other network that airs primarily unscripted TV. The New York Times reports on the channel’s growth, noting that Pawn Stars in 2009 and Swamp People in 2010 were responsible for “giving the channel its giant growth spurts” and leading it to now have “more middle-aged men than any other cable channel except ESPN.” The paper cites a report that noted “History had gained more ratings ground than any other single channel” in part because of the five million plus viewers that watch every Pawn Stars . The BBC One soap – which saw Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) bid farewell to Albert Square- saw approximately 11.4 million viewers tune in to watch the shocking scenes, where the troubled mum considered taking her own life after police discovered she was responsible for the death of Walford gangster Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb). ‘EastEnders’ easily beat its rival Coronation Street’s Christmas special – in which bolshie baddie Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) returned from prison and walked straight into a brawl with Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly) – with nine million viewers tuning in to the ITV1 soap. The year is concluding (as is the decade!), so it’s time for the requisite look back at the most popular stories on reality blurred over the past year. Despite the fact that I published, for the first time ever, the Survivor cast contract and rule book for the game , the most popular story was once again about porn. And if I hadn’t filtered out stories not published in the last year, stories about sex and nudity would dominate the list even more. So would stories that you’d think are old news by now. Two stories published in 2009 remained very popular this year, one that reported on Biggest Loser contestants suggesting Bob Harper is gay and the other asking if Adam Lambert is gay .
