The 200th and final episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs tonight on ABC, as the series has been cancelled —though a few episodes will be burned off/air as specials sometime in the future. Series host Ty Pennington is moving on to the daytime series The Revolution. Tonight’s two-hour episode follows the crew as they create seven homes in seven days in tornado-ravaged Joplin . This retrospective video is a reminder that, however over-produced and overly reliant on Sears appliances it was (and how it made a weird argument that happiness comes in the form of excessive consumerism), the show did a lot of good, and managed to bring communities together to help their neighbors. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the ABC reality series that gives deserving people brand-new homes and Sears appliances, has been cancelled, and will air its final and 200th episode on Jan. 13, which features the team building seven homes in Joplin . However, the show “will continue on ABC with specials after this season,” according to the network’s announcement. The Hollywood Reporter noted that “ABC moved the series to Fridays this year where it has struggled to attract the same audience — despite a slate of high-profile guests including first lady Michelle Obama and the Kardashains — against competition including Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares and scripted offerings including A Gifted Man.” Hosted by Trading Spaces carpenter Ty Pennington, the series took its name from a plastic surgery-style makeover series and debuted in December of 2003. Tonight, PBS will air a two-hour version of An American Family . The “Anniversary Edition” has been condensed from its 12-hour version by its original filmmakers, Alan Raymond and Susan Raymond, and debuts at 8 p.m. ET. If you haven’t yet seen the series that gave birth to reality television, which earlier this year was rebroadcast in its entirety on some stations, this is your best bet, as it’s not on DVD or available elsewhere.
