Mythbusters Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage will judge and executive produce a new competition on the Discovery Channel on which teams produce chain reaction contraptions. On each of Unchained Reaction ’s six episodes, which debut in March, “two teams made up of artists, rocket scientists, animatronic specialists, engineers and even your average Joe, are provided with identical sets of tools and materials and given five days to complete a series of mechanisms based on a specific theme,” and “refined mechanical movements, pyrotechnics and large-scale destruction are encouraged,” according to a Discovery Channel press release. Then, “Jamie and Adam are joined by a new guest judge to decide which team impressed them the most with their innovation, energy and how much spectacle they can create.” In his press release quote, Adam said that “The innovative solutions and boundless energy demonstrated by the contestants surprised us every single time.” View the original article here

America’s Got Talent added Howard Stern as a judge and will also add a fourth judge, according to executive producer Simon Cowell, who said the show needs a makeover as it approaches its seventh season. The judge will be “somebody younger. A girl. Someone who will not be afraid of Sharon [Osbourne] and Howard and fight for a different type of act than they would,” Simon told the New York Post , adding, “I always like four-person panels because it leaves less room for error. It also means you can have different skill-sets on there.” It also means more time spent on the judges, which is rarely interesting or warranted, especially if they get involved in the fake fighting that Simon loves so much. America’s Got Talent has signed Howard Stern as the show’s new judge, following Piers Morgan’s exit last month. As a result, the series will move its live shows to New York. Howard announced it on his Sirius XM show a few minutes ago, and its Twitter account posted , “It’s offical - Howard just signed on the dotted line - he is now the newest judge on America’s Got Talent!” NBC’s announcement said that “production of the live shows … will be moving to New York, where Stern will continue to helm his SiriusXM radio program.” NBC’s reality executive Paul Telegdy said Stern’s “larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic” and added that “Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success.” Last month, Howard was being coy by confirming discussions with the network by denying he was having discussions with NBC. Her exit may be sad for Rachel and her fans, but it is not surprising for those who watch reality competitions. It’s also not surprising that terrifyingly bad judge Nicole Scherzinger is responsible for the elimination—not because she voted to keep Marcus Canty, but because she refused to do anything. Even Paula Abdul made a decision, voting to keep Rachel because her performance “blew me away.” When it came time for Nicole to say who she was sending home, she touched her face dramatically and tried to squeeze out tears. Rachel, 13, told Nicole, 33, “Please don’t cry. It’s okay. I’m good with anything.” Nicole then officially acknowledged that she’s failed at her job as a judge. “I can’t make this decision. Please. Howard Stern may become the third judge on America’s Got Talent , joining Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel now that Piers Morgan has quit the show , and if he does, the show could move to New York City for its live shows. The satellite radio talk show host “is in talks with NBC” for “a $15 million a year sum to do the job,” the Wall Street Journal reports . His new job wouldn’t interrupt his Sirius XM Radio show, although the paper notes America’s Got Talent “is currently filmed on a CBS studio lot in Los Angeles but may relocate to New York for Mr. Stern, which would cost an additional $10 million.” I think that’s great casting and he’d be terrific. While Howard is frequently raunchy on the radio, especially now that he’s in an uncensored format, he can also be very smart and thoughtful (watch or read Private Parts for evidence), and that combination would work really well on the show. She will sit in one of the show’s signature swivel chairs , which may be risky considering her recent mishaps . The announcement comes one day after she was arrested for public intoxication . The three singers are defined as “musician coaches” instead of judges because the show, while it is an imported format, is set up to be a preemptive strike at Fox and Simon Cowell’s X Factor , which has its judges mentor a group of singers. America’s Got Talent returned for its sixth season last night, and came back strong, both in terms of content and viewers. Ratings were up 17 percent among people ages 18-49 and 21 percent overall, and the show brought its high energy and sense of fun to summer competition TV, which, along with So You Think You Can Dance , is so much better than the spring pair of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. The premiere featured auditions from both ridiculous and impressive acts, and too much of Nick Cannon, again . As usual, someone who’s producing the series thinks we want to constantly see Nick Cannon backstage either reacting awkwardly or, worse, doing some shitty imitation of what he is seeing on stage. Nick Cannon is actually a great host and interviewer, so I really, really wish they’d stop this nonsense, but clearly someone is infatuated with those cutaways. Cheryl was officially announced as a judge just 20 days ago, and has already been featured in a Fox promo ; Nicole was once on Popstars and was not good as a judge on The Sing Off . However, TMZ reported that, after live auditions, “producers were concerned [Cheryl’s] English accent would be too difficult for an American audience to understand,” which can’t possibly be the only reason because they did not cast her without knowing she had an accent, and also that she and Paula Abdul had a “lack of chemistry,” which seems much more plausible. While no one has yet to confirm this, and this is the second TMZ story in two days about someone replacing someone else on a Fox singing reality series, Variety reports that “Fox declined comment” to them, which seems pretty damning. The So You Think You Can Dance judging panel is reverting back to its configuration from a few years ago: Mary Murphy is returning and Mia Michaels quit , and now judge and producer Nigel Lythgoe has revealed that Adam Shankman will only be an occasional guest judge. That means that when the show debuts next Thursday, the panel will be just like it was from seasons three to five: Nigel, Mary, and a guest judge, including Debbie Allen. A Fox press release confirms that Nigel and Mary are “resident judges” and the others, including Adam, are “guest judges.” That is excellent, awesome news. The seventh season of Next Food Network Star is currently in production, and a report says that Courteney Cox has appeared as a guest judge, which was made possible by the fact that the studio the show uses is on the same lot as Cougar Town’s. Page Six reports on her appearance, quoting a source who said, “The show is filmed on the same lot as ‘Cougar Town,’ so it was easy for her to come over and appear as a guest judge.” The ABC single-camera comedy films at Culver Studios in Culver City, Calif. Simon told reporters “I’m not going to say today” because “we honestly haven’t made out mind up yet.” There have been breathless reports recently that UK judge Cheryl Cole will join the show, and the perpetual rumor that Paula Abdul will reunite with Simon in the fall. Talking to reporters, Simon also answered a lot of basic questions about the show’s structure that would have easily been answered by watching an episode of the UK version, scanning its Wikipedia entry , or just actually reading the press release—challenging things for working journalists. Popular American Idol mentor Harry Connick, Jr., was asked to be one of the new judges for the show’s 10th season, but said that talks “fizzled out,” though he didn’t say why. That freed him up to do Dolphin Tale, a movie about a boy who befriends a dolphin with an artificial tail. Talking to TV critics last night—after charming the pants off of us with a performance to promote his upcoming Great Performances special on PBS that includes footage of his recent Broadway run—he said that he would have liked to become a permanent judge. “They asked me if I was interested in doing it, and I was interested.
