Mythbusters Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage will judge and executive produce a new competition on the Discovery Channel on which teams produce chain reaction contraptions. On each of Unchained Reaction ’s six episodes, which debut in March, “two teams made up of artists, rocket scientists, animatronic specialists, engineers and even your average Joe, are provided with identical sets of tools and materials and given five days to complete a series of mechanisms based on a specific theme,” and “refined mechanical movements, pyrotechnics and large-scale destruction are encouraged,” according to a Discovery Channel press release. Then, “Jamie and Adam are joined by a new guest judge to decide which team impressed them the most with their innovation, energy and how much spectacle they can create.” In his press release quote, Adam said that “The innovative solutions and boundless energy demonstrated by the contestants surprised us every single time.” View the original article here

Several networks announced new reality shows over the past few days, and several of those caught my attention, either because they seem fascinating or horrifying or both. First, the best/worst-titled series ever: The CW’s Oh Sit! , which is actually musical chairs. Apparently, there will be an obstacle course as part of that, so it could be fun if it’s at all like Wipeout . Then again, it’s still musical chairs on prime-time network TV. National Geographic is planning Are You Tougher than a Boy Scout? is produced by Deadliest Catch producers Original Productions, and features “adults from all walks of life will compete with the country’s top Boy Scouts for merit badges in challenges on the Scouts’ 100-year-old handbook.” Following the fascinating, must-watch UK series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding , two networks have ordered their own gypsy shows. The History Channel is casting for a new reality competition that will feature jousting in armor. Full Metal Jousting is described as a “hard-hitting competition [that] will recreate the raw, crushing force of hardcore jousting battles by arming 16 fierce competitors with lances, armor and a 2,000-pound war horse,” with the winner receiving $100,000. Besides the fact that sounds awesome, the show is being produced by Pilgrim Films & Television, which also produces the excellent Top Shot for History, so it will probably be done well. Pilgrim is casting for “America’s toughest and bravest”; if you apply, “you don’t need to be an experienced jouster,” but must be “a skilled horseback rider and have the heart of a warrior,” according to the casting notice . Casting for the 2011-2012 seasons of Survivor will begin soon, as CBS has brought back the Sears online casting competition, which lets viewers vote to select a cast member. Last year, they gave us Jimmy T, so the bar is set pretty high. Prospective cast members who want to leave their casting in the hands of CBS.com-dwelling fans can upload videos from Dec. 7 to 28, and the top 10 will be selected by producers on Jan. 11 based on “creativity (25%), feasibility of winning the Survivor show (25%), personality (25%) and body language/performance (25%).” The rules point out out that if you win, “you may be competing against program participants who may have knowledge of your identity and/or various information concerning you prior to the commencement of the production of the Survivor Show.” If you want to be cast the old fashioned way, you’d best try to get the attention of a recruiter by getting yourself to Santa Monica and start walking around looking hot, cocky, and/or dumb, because t...
