For its third season, Bravo’s Top Chef Masters is dropping its format and modeling itself after its parent. And besides firing host Kelly Choi and replacing her with Curtis Stone, the show is dropping all its judges (Gael Greene, Jay Rayner, and Gail Simmons) except one, James Oseland, and replacing the others with food critic Ruth Reichl. Bravo’s announcement also included the identities of the 12 contestants , and said that they “will no longer be judged on a scale, but in elimination style challenges just as the tried and true format of the original,” so “money will be at stake, with the winners of every quickfire challenge winning $5,000 and elimination challenges winning $10,000 for their designated charities.” I’m disappointed that the show is dropping numerical scoring, which made the elimination decisions—if not the judging itself—far more objective than subjective. This season, Top Chef Masters made a number of changes to its format . Overall, they have not helped what was already a great show. Let’s start with the good. Curtis Stone is a far better host than Kelly Choi, though he is overexposed and sometimes irritating (we know you’re a chef, too, you don’t have to keep reminding us). And the format, which just borrows from its parent series, is an improvement over the first two seasons’ tournament format that got rid of compelling personalities way too rapidly. The problem is that every other change has hurt the series. The judging has gone severely downhill. The judges used to score dishes with numerical stars, and that was an excellent way of illustrating subjective judgement. It was so great I thought—and still think—Top Chef should adopt that system. It gives us a clearer idea of what the judges think and how different chefs compare, and we can understand exactly why someone gets eliminated. But this season dropped it in favor of the forma...

Top Chef Masters will return for a third season this year, and its worst part, host Kelly Choi, will be gone, replaced by Celebrity Apprentice star Curtis Stone, who will also be on NBC’s forthcoming America’s Next Great Restaurant . Bravo simply said in an announcement that the show “will return for a third season later this year with Curtis Stone as host,” but offered no other details. (Also, Top Chef will return for a ninth season, unsurprisingly.) While she wasn’t the worst host on a Bravo competition show ever, she had awkward line readings and little personality. Curtis Stone was great on Celebrity Apprentice, though hosting is a different animal, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles it, and if he’s more Padma Lakshmi, China Chow, or Katie Lee Joel.
