American Idol’s cast will remain unchanged for season 11, with Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson on the panel and Ryan Seacrest hosting. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said as much this past weekend, and the only real question was whether Jennifer Lopez would return, and if so, for how long. Since the announcement only says the panel is returning for season 11 in 2012, the negotiations presumably resulted in a one-year contract, meaning she can get more money and/or leave after season 11. Lots of media reports say she’s getting $20 million for next season, up from $12 million, but they tend to attribute that vaguely, and I can’t find a clear, attributed source of that information. Anyway, Fox said that the new season will debut Jan. 22, a Sunday, following the NFC championship game; that’s two weeks before The Voice returns following the Super Bowl on NBC. For its second season, The Voice will move into a new timeslot after it debuts following the Super Bowl, NBC announced this morning. The show will debut Feb. 5 after Super Bowl XLVI, and then continues Monday night, Feb. 6, from 8 to 10 p.m. ET. That’s its new timeslot, a change from Tuesdays at 9 (and also 10). The timeslot premiere will be followed by NBC’s debut of Smash, a musical drama about a Broadway show that stars American Idol alum Katharine McPhee. Big Brother 13 will debut on July 7 and air on nearly the same schedule it did last year: Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. However, the Thursday live show has been moved to 9 p.m. ET, while the Wednesday and Sunday episodes will both continue to air at 8. Last year, the show moved to Wednesdays and all of its episodes aired at 8 p.m. CBS’ announcement offered no details about the new season or its twist, nor did it mention the broadcast of After Dark on Showtime. However, the network did announce that its show Same Name , a reality series following quasi-celebrities swapping lives with someone who shares their name, will air after Big Brother on Sunday nights starting on July 24. Survivor Redemption Island’s debut episode next week will only have one sponsor, Sprint, a first for the series that will allow the show to have more content, hopefully not of Sprint phones. In addition, the ad breaks will only feature 30-second Sprint commercials and minute-long segments about former contestants. CBS said in a press release that “Sprint’s sponsorship will allow for additional minutes of show content in the premiere episode,” and that “each of the four commercial breaks in the premiere episode will feature a ‘Survivor: Redemption Island ‘What If? Moment’ Presented by Sprint,’ a series of 60-second vignettes spotlighting a popular former Survivor’s tactical game. The vignette will recap the alliances they made and betrayed, their eventual elimination and how their strategy might have been altered if they knew they had a second chance at redemption.” Those segments, CBS said, will be narrated by Jeff Probst and selected by Jeff and executive producer David Burris, along...

For Steel Magnolia, season-two winner of CMT's "Can You Duet?," that exposure has definitely been a blessing by way of a top five single ("Keep On Lovin' You") and an opening slot on Brad Paisley's 2010 tour. Steel Magnolia reaped yet another blessing this week with its self-titled debut album on Big Machine. Sarah Palin’s Alaska had TLC’s highest-rated debut ever last night, as close to five million viewers tuned in to a show that cost the network about $1 million an episode. That’s about half the record number of viewers Jon & Kate Plus Eight got when they separated. A TLC press release said that it “is the #1 program launch in TLC history … besting the What Not to Wear series launch in 2003, and posting triple digit rating and delivery gains vs. the prior six week prime average.” Besides inspiring a drinking game and inspiring theories about its subliminal messages, critical reaction to the series is mixed.
