If you haven’t seen Hannibal before then what have you been doing? The hit NBC show in its first season followed FBI special agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as he uncovers some incredibly gruesome murders. Throughout the season he visits Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) who acts as his psychiatrist to help deal with what he’s seen in seeing the murder victims. Esquire’s reality series Friday Night Tykes , which follows youth football teams in Texas, debuted last week, and has already generated response from USA Football, which insists what happens on the series is “in sharp contrast to USA Football’s core beliefs and what is taking place on the majority of youth football fields across the country.” Let’s hope. Because this kind of brutality against eight and nine year olds that was included in the first episode is insane. I cannot think of any way to describe some of what’s in the first episode other than child abuse. Clearly, though, to some, this is perfectly acceptable. The brand-new reality series that strands 15 people for a year and broadcasts live feeds of their interaction is coming to Fox. Utopia debuted to strong ratings just a few weeks ago in the Netherlands and was created by John de Mol, who’s behind the original Big Brother format. The show is like Big Brother meets Survivor , with both a survival and a competition element, plus live feeds. Fox will keep those but air the show only once a week; the Dutch network SBS 6 airs it five nights a week. There’s a competition element that also keeps adding new participants: those on the show nominate each other for eviction, but someone from the bottom three is evicted by one of two newcomers (the other newcomer is also sent home). Fox’s new reality executive, Simon Andreae, said in a press release that the show “will be the largest, most ambitious social experiment on television” and called it “an irresistible and truly forward-thinking television format.” There isn’t a timeline yet for when i

Animal Planet’s series Call of the Wildman has been revealed to not only be staged, faking its animal rescues by planting animals and using them as props in a scripted series. It’s even caused death to one of the animals it is supposed to be about saving. The network’s press release for the show’s second season described it as being about “Turtleman” Ernie Brown, Jr., “Kentucky’s most famous backwoods animal-trapper,” who “has the uncanny ability to catch monster-snapping turtles and other pesky critters with his bare hands and return them into the wild unscathed.” As it turns out, just the opposite is true. The network and producers admit to staging and manufacturing the situations—the show does now end with a disclaimer saying the show “contains some dramatizations”—but some of the animals they’ve acquired and planted to be caught have been hurt in the process. CBS announced today that Survivor Cagayan will debut Feb. 26, about a week later than usual, though it will have a two-hour premiere. That’s likely to get out of the way of NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics, which ends Feb. 23—the day The Amazing Race ’s all-star season premiere. A press release notes that Survivor ’s debut will be “the first two-hour launch since Heroes vs. Villains on Feb. 11, 2010.” It’s unclear, though, if this is just the first two episodes stuck together, an easy way to deal with moving the premiere a week later without affecting the rest of the season. Celebrity Apprentice ’s seventh season is so delayed that it there may be at least two years between seasons for the show, which was not on NBC’s schedule this year and which has not yet started production. It’s possible the show won’t return until summer 2015, if at all. Sunday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt told TV critics in L.A. that “we’re casting it now.” NBC reality executive Paul Teledgy added, “We’re going to shoot it in the spring. Then it will be available to us as an option for midseason.” If they decide not to use that option, that might bump it to summer 2015—or later, or at all? Last July, NBC confirmed to me that the show wouldn’t shoot until this spring and air until this summer, so the network is on track for that production schedule, at least. In a possible game-changing move in the Giudice’s court battle, the Real Housewives of New Jersey star has requested separate trials for himself and his wife Teresa, stating that Teresa had no involvement in the criminal activity they’ve been charged with and didn’t even know it was happening. People obtained copies of court documents Joe Giudice filed on Jan. 15, where he more or less is assuming 100 percent responsibility in the 41 counts of fraud he and his wife have been charged with. In the legal paperwork, Joe says that Teresa was never involved and he’s willing to testify to her innocence – but only if they’re granted separate trials. The documents, filed by Joe’s attorney, read: “Should the trials be severed, Mr. Giudice has affirmed his willingness to testify as to Teresa’s involvement in the alleged criminal activity.

ABC’s short-lived competition series The Glass House is back, it feels like, in Syfy’s new competition series Opposite Worlds , which takes much more from that series than it does from Big Brother —though of course, Glass House improved on the CBS summer competition. The major addition and twist here is that one team lives in relative poverty while the other lives in relative luxury. It’s a fun conceit that adds stakes, though so far those don’t seem to be impacting the players too much. After a few weeks, though, perhaps the desire to switch sides—or maintain—will become much stronger. The show continues tonight with a live episode, and those are always hit-or-miss, so we’ll see how it goes.
