Doctor Who took centre stage representing TV drama in last night’s National Television Awards, with Jenna Coleman going on stage to collect two awards – One for the show and one for her former co-star Matt Smith.
As pretty much expected, Doctor Who picked up the prestigious Best Drama award, with Smith picking up the award for Best Drama Performance, but in his absence it was down to his former companion, Jenna Coleman to go and collect the gongs on his behalf.
Addressing the show’s 50th year, and Smith’s departure, both Coleman’s speeches’ were emotional tributes to Smith, who she praised and credited for the BBC sci-fi family entertainment show’s ever growing success, without a mention, or appearance from his successor Peter Capaldi insight, telling the applauding crowd:
“It’s been such a fantastic year… this past year for Who,
“This is wonderful – to be able to take this back to everybody that is grafting as speak, doing series 8.”
However, following the ceremony, which almost seemed to be the perfect time to close the chapter of Smith’s Doctor, the former Emmerdale actress did have a few lovely words to say about her new Time Lord, including how she thought he would be “wonderful”!
Discussing the new era with press at the prestigious award ceremony, Coleman commented:
“[Peter is] great – of course, we all know he’s going to be wonderful,
“It’s been great to get up on our feet and get started – we just seem to have taken off like a rocket.”
Peter Capaldi, and the rest of the cast and crew were absent from last night’s ceremony as they are all busy working on the eighth series of Doctor Who, which will mark Capaldi’s first full debut in the show, back in Cardiff.
The new series is expected to air later this year and run through completely without a break – Watch Matt Smith’s private acceptance speech for fans in the clip below:
