June 8th, 2011 by Anna Howell. 5 Comments There wasn’t a dry eye in the house last night when Emmerdale’s Jackson Walsh finally ended his life, with the help of his mother and partner, but the tissues have barely dried before the critics start flinging their two pence worth in. We all knew it wouldn’t be pretty, but it is safe to say that the scenes, acted out brilliantly, were nothing we could have expected, and why? Because instead of making the end a lovely, peaceful drift off to sleep, producers gave a more realistic portrayal of the experience. It would seem though that Emmerdale – who dare to cross the line into realistic storyline’s with real consequences and believable acting- could never win in this situation. Had they, as critics are now saying they should have, played sad music while Jackson ‘drifted off’, whilst Aaron and Hazel wiped away a little tear, the ITV soap would have been slammed for ‘glorifying’ assisted suicide, for promoting it as the right thing to do even. We had been expecting soft music and the young man passing off into a peaceful sleep, but what was aired was so much more upsetting and real that we were both impressed and horrified at the same time. Twitter went mad with comments about Jackson’s death as the scenes aired and as Aaron and Hazel said their tragic goodbye to their son and lover, fans admitted to being in floods of tears. The worst moment for us was when Hazel broke down, sobbing and in the end admitting that she couldn’t give the lethal combination of drugs to Jackson. Silently crying, Aaron then took over and bravely told his partner: ‘You have changed my life,’ before kissing him and holding the glass to his lips. No comments Marc Silcock has revealed that Emmerdale bosses deliberately made his character’s last scenes on the ITV soap ‘horrific’, because they didn’t want to ‘glorifythe nature of assisted suicide. Viewers were upset and emotional last night, after Jackson Walsh was fed a cocktail of drugs by his partner Aaron Livesy. Aaron then sobbed and cried while his lover died in the arms of his mum, Hazel. Speaking to The Sun, Marc said they made the scenes as hard to watch as possible, so that it wouldn’t seem like to easy option to people watching.
