American Idol’s eleventh season debuted last night, and “season one-one,” as Randy Jackson wouldn’t stop saying, was pretty much the same thing as always. And while the show remains far and away the most popular series on television, it lost 24 percent of its viewers 18 to 49 compared to last season’s debut. The debut a year ago was Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s first appearance on the show, so there was obviously increased interest then, and they remain the most interesting part, if only because they are less predictable than the rest of the show. That’s especially true since Steven Tyler continues to say whatever comes into his mind—like when a female auditioner’s family came in and he told her dad it was “hot, humid, and happenin,’” adding, “just like your daughter.” Anyway, the episode averaged 21.9 million viewers, which was down versus 26.25 last year, and it lost 24 percent of its viewers 18 to 49. American Idol was beaten by CBS sit-com The Big Bang Theory during the 8 p.m. half-hour last night, but it is far from dead. The 100th episode of the comedy had slightly more viewers 18 to 49 than the Fox series did. According to a CBS press release, that was “its best-ever deliveries in households, viewers, adults 25-54, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 against an episode of American Idol.” As Vulture notes , last year, “Idol trounced the Chuck Lorre sitcom, and it was rare that any show, anywhere on TV, outdrew any half-hour of Idol in the demo.” Although we’re waiting for final numbers, Deadline reports that “standings in the half-hour are expected to remain the same.” American Idol still had more viewers overall, and it has been beaten before: by Dancing with the Stars , by CSI , and even by Big Brother . Ryan Seacrest’s $15 million a year contract with American Idol is up after this season, and there seems to be some possibility that he could leave—and Seacrest didn’t even categorically dismiss the idea of moving to NBC to host The Voice . First, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that “multiple sources [have] suggested that Fox will attempt to get Seacrest to take a pay cut. But Seacrest is unlikely to capitulate, especially given the money thrown at Jennifer Lopez, who sources say is making $20 million each season.” The paper adds that “Insiders say that Seacrest’s representatives have become frustrated with the lack of Idol negotiations. ‘Fox has been doing nothing, they’e been sitting there. American Idol 7 auditioner Alexis Cohen was killed when a man fleeing police hit her , and now that man has agreed to a plea bargain that means he won’t be charged with her death in any way. The Asbury Park Press reports that Daniel Bark, 25, “pleaded guilty Monday to eluding police and drunken driving in a plea bargain in which additional charges related to the hit-and-run death of an American Idol hopeful will be dismissed.” Specifically, prosecutors will drop charges of “aggravated manslaughter, death by auto and knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal accident.” While he confessed to police, his lawyer says there’s no evidence he killed her, and the confession was thrown out because, the paper reports, police “did not advise Bark of his rights to remain silent and have an attorney present during questioning before they began interrogating him about Cohen’s death.” A different attorney who represented him when he was arrested told a newspaper in 2009 that Bark was on suicide watch...
A woman was arrested at the American Idol 11 auditions, charged with trespassing and “refused to leave and became combative,” the criminal complaint said. WPXI reports that Brittany Acosta “was arrested at the Pittsburgh Convention Center after she showed up for last week’s auditions without credentials and refused to leave,” and now “faces trespassing and resisting arrest charges.” Brittany, who spent five nights in jail, admits she’s a serial auditioner (“I’ve been to California everywhere. I’ve been to Texas. I’ve been to Arizona. St. Louis. American Idol’s cast will remain unchanged for season 11, with Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson on the panel and Ryan Seacrest hosting. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said as much this past weekend, and the only real question was whether Jennifer Lopez would return, and if so, for how long. Since the announcement only says the panel is returning for season 11 in 2012, the negotiations presumably resulted in a one-year contract, meaning she can get more money and/or leave after season 11. Lots of media reports say she’s getting $20 million for next season, up from $12 million, but they tend to attribute that vaguely, and I can’t find a clear, attributed source of that information. Anyway, Fox said that the new season will debut Jan. 22, a Sunday, following the NFC championship game; that’s two weeks before The Voice returns following the Super Bowl on NBC.
