Simon Cowell has taken responsibility, saying it had nothing to do with her chemistry with the other judges, only that he thought Cheryl would be happier on the UK version, though now she is on neither. The official word came Monday in a brief statement that offered no explanation: “FOX, FREMANTLEMEDIA NORTH AMERICA AND SYCO TV today confirm Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing Cheryl Cole on the judging panel of THE X FACTOR. Cheryl was officially announced as a judge just 20 days ago, and has already been featured in a Fox promo ; Nicole was once on Popstars and was not good as a judge on The Sing Off . However, TMZ reported that, after live auditions, “producers were concerned [Cheryl’s] English accent would be too difficult for an American audience to understand,” which can’t possibly be the only reason because they did not cast her without knowing she had an accent, and also that she and Paula Abdul had a “lack of chemistry,” which seems much more plausible. While no one has yet to confirm this, and this is the second TMZ story in two days about someone replacing someone else on a Fox singing reality series, Variety reports that “Fox declined comment” to them, which seems pretty damning. She will join other judge L.A. Reid and executive producer Simon Cowell, who judged alongside Cheryl on the UK version of the show. In a press release quote that actually sounds like it came from the person it’s attributed to, Simon said, “I’m thrilled for Cheryl. Reid , they are Paula Abdul and Cheryl Cole. If this holds up, it basically means that months of leaks and reports in trade and gossip press have been pointless, because Paula was rumored to judge 18 months ago , and Cheryl Cole was first mentioned last fall (along with Nicole Scherzinger) before the real onslaught of rumors that even included Lindsay Lohan . The “kind of” qualification comes because Deadline’s Nikki Finke talked to Simon and reports that Simon “made it clear to me he has finally decided on his judging panel.” But in her either sloppy or clever way, she does not quote him directly, and notes “that negotiations for Abdul’s deal hasn’t even started and that Cole’s deal isn’t quite done yet.” Still, she insists Cowell “has made up his mind to bring back Paula Abdul” and use UK judge Cheryl Cole. Dancing with the Stars pro Cheryl Burke has published a new memoir in which she discusses being molested as a child and physically abused as an adult by two boyfriends. Cheryl’s book, Dancing Lessons: How I Found Passion and Potential on the Dance Floor and in Life, will be released Feb. 8, and since it was ghostwritten by People magazine writer Monica Rizzo, the magazine has an interview with Cheryl, and reports that when she was a kid, “Burke was repeatedly molested by a friend of her family’s — and testified against him in court, helping send him to prison for nearly two decades,” while as an adult, she suffered “physical abuse by two former boyfriends.” “They’re not secrets.
