In its first Sunday episode, Big Brother 16 revealed several minor but smart changes that improved the show. Its players are freaking out over floaters, becoming paranoid, forming and abandoning alliances, which is bad for their games but decent entertainment, the kind we expect from this show but didn’t get much of last year. The most significant change: The tedious key-draw ceremony, utilizing the table’s turntable, has been eliminated in favor of an immediate reveal of the HOH’s decision. They turn a key; the nominee’s face appears on a screen. Besides cutting down on the time that the whole thing takes, this is far a more dramatic reveal, because there isn’t dwindling suspense as to who might be chosen. Unfortunately, the first two HOHs used their power lamely—or at least, their reasons were lame. It’s in HD, there will be two HOHs, there’s a new “Team America” twist, but for better or for worse, those don’t seem new at all, just variations on old themes, with no sign that the show will stop grinding along on the same well-worn path it has been for years. The welcome change to HD felt completely normal but simultaneously disorienting; the new house design is bright and clean and pops, though several camera angles were oddly blurry. Original Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels has left the show, marking her third exit. NBC said only in a statement that “The Biggest Loser and Jillian Michaels have decided to part ways and she will not be returning for season 16 when it airs in the fall.” While there was no reason given for her exit, told Us Weekly last month, “The problem with Biggest Loser is that it’s become such a cartoon of me and it’s also—you maybe see what I’ve done in 10 days, you maybe see 5 minutes of it. Yes, summer has its reality series: the big ones are Big Brother and America’s Got Talent , and there are also shows such as American Ninja Warrior and The Bachelorette . But a bunch of new and returning shows, most on cable, are (or appear) worthy of sampling. We haven’t had a breakout hit this summer like last year’s terrific Naked and Afraid , but perhaps in this batch there will be such a show. For the second year in a row, the Emmy nominations for reality TV’s major categories remain nearly unchanged, though two new categories have offered some new entrants—and new reasons to wonder why voters make the decisions they do. There were 57 people eligible for a reality show host nomination, yet we ended up with basically the same people who were nominated last year. Last year’s nominees for reality show host dropped Phil Keoghan in favor of Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, while this year’s replaces Ryan Seacrest with Jane Lynch, who hosts NBC’s fun Hollywood Game Night . Yet once again, Betty White has been nominated for NBC’s now-cancelled Off Their Rockers, which only makes sense as a vote for her, not her work on the show, which is not worthy of recognition. Some diehard rock lovers in Richmond, Virginia worked together to organise a show in the hope that the band would turn up and play in the region for the first time in 15 years. The gig, which eventually sold 1,400 tickets through a crowd-sourcing model, is all set to go ahead after the Foo Fighters eventually gave it their approval and added the date to their diaries. Any fear/hope that Big Brother was turning into and/or borrowing from Survivor ’s game was put to rest during last night’s episode. While the cast is the best the show has had in years and minor production changes have improved the episodes, it remains Big Brother , for better or for worse. But as of right not, it’s definitely better, especially compared to the last few dreadful seasons. The two HOH thing simply adds another step in the game; everything else remains exactly the same as always. I suppose there’s potential for the losing HOH’s nominations to come back and bite him or her, so perhaps it’ll yield dramatic dividends, but it did not this week. The Real World season 30 is definitely filming in Chicago, as officials approved Bunim-Murray’s request to film the show in a former nightclub at 1100 W. Randolph St.. But residents who met with producers are skeptical and don’t want the “shenanigans” that came last time the show filmed in the Windy City. The Chicago Tribune reported that the “Zoning Board of Appeals has issued Bunim/Murray, which produces the reality series, a special use permit” and Chicago Film Office’s Rich “Moskal said filming on the reality show will likely begin in August and continue over 12 weeks.” DNAinfo Chicago reported that before the meeting with the zoning board, a small group of West Loop residents met with producers. One, Greg Shapps, who lived near the first Chicago house, called it “a real pain in the ass” because “there were a lot of idiots out there”—and he wasn’t talking about the cast. Host Chris Harrison revealed in an interview with TV Guide that while some on the show’s crew did not want to film or air an on-camera reveal, he “fought like crazy to shoot it and eventually use it”—though even show creator Mike Fleiss felt bad about filming it. While the death of a cast member is the most brutally real thing the show has ever dealt with, and while I certainly don’t think they should have concealed it from the cast, the entire segment felt exploitative and crass, just another occasion for The Bachelor franchise to use people’s emotions to get ratings. Survivor Blood vs. Water cast member Caleb Bankston, the fiance of Colton Cumbie, was killed today in an accident where he worked. He was 26. The AP reported this evening that “[o]fficials from a Kansas-based transportation company say a worker has died in an accident at the Alabama Warrior Railway in Birmingham.” People confirmed that it was Caleb, noting that he “worked at the Alabama Warrior Railway in Birmingham” and that he “died when the train he was on derailed.” No other details were available late Tuesday. Last night, CBS’ highly anticipated new space drama, Extant premiered. We were pretty excited about the premiere of the drama, and we weren’t really disappointed. Much like any new show, we got the background of what was going on, but there were a few odd surprises along the way. Head on inside for all the details. So, to begin with, Molly Woods (Halle Berry) is an astronaut, and she’s just come back to earth after being on a 13-month solo mission in space. But, she came back to earth with a bump – literally. The first episode posed a lot of questions, which we’re hoping will be answered as the first season goes on, but we’re willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt for a few weeks. Big Brother has had many greats—and by that, I mean houseguests who came across as delusional nitwits, impossibly frustrating to watch yet also entertaining. They’re paranoid, confrontational, controlling, megalomaniacal, dumb, and/or just plain annoying. If that’s the standard of great, Devin certainly meets it, least of all because of his tearful and dumb house meeting speech, when he said, “When I walked through that door on day one, and I got to stand in the same house where a lot of the greats have played, it hit me that the greats haven’t gotten to the end of this game without being somewhat dishonest and somewhat deceitful at times.” I’d transcribe the rest but it doesn’t get any more coherent. This American Life’s episode this weekend was about “Human Spectacle,” and although the intros drew connections to reality television, there was only one story about reality TV—and it was horrifying. It’s the story of a comedian who starred in a 1998 Japanese reality show, Susunu! Denpa Shonen , which left him alone in a room, naked and with no outside contact or supplies. He had to subsist only on what he won via sweepstakes, and couldn’t leave until he’d won about $10,000 worth of prizes. The show also broadcast a live feed to millions of viewers, edited to turn his suffering into hilarious comedy. The year Nasubi spent doing that, which included eating dog food, pales in comparison to what producers did next. Listen to the story before reading on. Twitter rumors suggest that the celeb even chose Valentino over her own brother; she was less than sympathetic about his inability to fit into his designer suit, a predicament that is believed to have spurred his wedding absence. Tonight, the Big Brother debuts its 16th season, with an entirely new cast and somewhat of a new format. Based on the past 15 seasons, a lot of things will happen, ranging from the innocuous to the outrageous, that will lead viewers and people like me to criticize the show’s producers. For example, it’s more likely not that the show will be edited into formulaic episodes that match past episodes beat-for-beat. Its relatively low-rent cast, personally selected by CBS CEO Les Moonves, will shout in the Diary Room and act like twits. Human error will invite conspiracy theories, as will producers’ attempts to silence the houseguests and prevent them from talking about things. Twists will seem like blatant attempts at manipulating the game. Houseguests may say stupid, offensive, and/or bigoted things, and CBS will copy and paste the same response. All of that typical Big Brother stuff is ultimately the result of how the show plays out live: being filmed in real time and broadcast live on
