Overall, Adkins raised $1,554,072 for American Red Cross, while Penn Jillette raised $698,655 for Opportunity Village, according to NBC. Jillette’s total for his charity, which helps people with intellectual disabilities get jobs, included $100,000 for having the best-selling Walgreens ice cream. As a reality TV character and contestant, I liked Penn better, and wish he’d won, but Trace made a compelling argument for why he should win, not that Donald Trump has ever used evidence in his decision-making. Bravo’s reality competition Work of Art should work better than most talent-based competitions. That’s because, unlike Top Chef, we can watch the construction from something to nothing and, with some exceptions, judge the final product ourselves. We don’t have to rely on judges to tell us how something tastes; we can just look, as we can on Project Runway. But as the second-season finale proved, Work of Art is majorly broken, and that’s because of its judging. It’s terrifyingly obvious that the show needs to dump its judges—China Chow, Jerry Saltz, and Bill Powers—because they cannot offer a consistent, coherent critique of the art and unintentionally mock the art world by being a parody of art critics. And while Big Brother host Julie Chen is staying along with Sara Gilbert, she’s being blamed for being part of the problem. American Idol raced through its Las Vegas episode, compressing Beatles performances sometimes into mere clips, so it could get to three hours of elimination faster. But the hour started with a glimmer of hope, and her name is Peggi Blu. She easily outshined mentor Jimmy Iovine, who apparently thinks he’s on The Sopranos and can just sit and mumble things like, “You ain’t gonna win singing that song.” The directness of Iovine’s comments was promising, but Peggi Blu is pure awesomeness. Her passion (or something) came out in hilarious, angry statements. “You’re going to die onstage in front of all those people. I’m going to be laying in my bed watching you just croak,” she said at one point. She interrupted two singers after they started a song and screamed, “No! What is that? Sing, dammit! American Idol has hired Ray Chew as its new band director, but is planning to hide him and the musicians, replacing them on the stage with audience members, because as we all know, American Idol’s biggest problem was that it had too few coached audience members getting screen time. The Hollywood Reporter first reported that Ray Chew would join the show; he’s previously produced and conducted live music for live TV shows such as the Grammys, the 2008 Democractic National Convention, and The Singing Bee .
