Survivor will broadcast the conclusion to its spring finale from Los Angeles, instead of the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City, which is typically the spring season’s live reunion home. It will be broadcast May 12, one week after the two-hour Amazing Race finale. CBS didn’t announce a reason for the change, but just listed the one-hour reunion as “from Los Angeles” in a press release. Survivor: The Australian Outback aired its reunion from L.A., but the next spring, Survivor Marquesas ’ Central Park reunion began the tradition of New York hosting spring finales. The co-creators of the show took to Twitter yesterday, not long after the finale of the current series aired, to promise fans that work on a third run will begin shortly. Richard Hatch was sentenced to nine months in prison today, after being convicted of probation violation in January. The AP reports that the judge gave him “three months longer than the guidelines to deter him and others who would flout the terms of supervised release.” The Providence Journal reports that U.S. District Court Judge William Smith “ordered Hatch, of Newport, to surrender to the U.S. marshals to begin serving his sentence on Monday” and then “Hatch is ordered to serve 26 months of supervised release, requiring him to pay 25 percent of his gross income to the IRS.” While Hatch plans to appeal, this means he will miss The Celebrity Apprentice’s finale in May, and wouldn’t be able to return for Survivor this summer, if producers wanted to bring him back. (There were refuted rumors that producers wanted him to face off against Jonny Fairplay.) Congratulations, teenage voters and old people with bad taste: You have given us a country music-heavy finale and two finalists with the stage presence of paper bags. Yes, Lauren Alaina, 16, and Scotty McCreery, 17, are the final two, making this two weeks in a row now where the strongest performer and musician has gone home, as Haley Reinhart, 20, was eliminated. And it’s not because people stopped caring or voting: About 95 million votes were cast, which Fox says was “the highest number of votes ever for a non-finale episode.” Next week, the final two episodes move to Tuesday, when the final two will each perform, and Wednesday, when we’ll gather for the traditional two-hour live blog/support group to make it through the parade of post-apocalypse horror that awaits us. The Amazing Race’s two-hour finale was the lowest-rated final episode in its 18 seasons, though it did do well against its competition, which may be all that matters. CBS said in a press release that the show “was first in viewers (8.91m), adults 25-54 (3.3/08) and tied for first in adults 18-49 (2.5/07, with both ABC and FOX).” However, as TV By the Numbers notes , it was “down 4% from last week to its lowest rating finale ever.” More interesting to me is what Nielsen data compiled by TV By the Numbers shows: the episode actually lost viewers over time. It started with 9.162 million at 8 p.m., dropped to 8.855 at 8:30, dropped another half-million in the 9 p.m. half-hour to 8.393 million, and rebounded in the final half-hour to 9.241 million viewers who tuned in just to see who won. While some jump can be expected during a reality series’ final moments, it seems like people were too bored to watch the entire two-hour episode. Survivor is casting a stand-in resembling Matt Elrod for three days around the show’s May 15 finale. Matt was just voted out of the game for the second time , and obviously his time on Redemption Island will be discussed during the live reunion, but why does the show need a stand-in for him and him alone for three days? The gig is for an AFTRA member who will get paid $24 an hour for three days; the person needs to be between 160 and 195 pounds, white, and between 18 and 30, with “long blonde hair.” While it wouldn’t be strange or suspicious for the show to use stand-ins to prepare lighting—they do that on location, using the Dream Team to light Tribal Council, and prepare the cameras at the start of every challenge—this is the only casting notice for a Survivor stand-in currently posted on Actors Access.
