Next Great Baker Recap: Who Is Going To The Finale?

Last week on Next Great Baker on TLC, we said goodbye to Megan and Melo after their pyrotechnics disaster! This week, the final four take on a beautiful cake in their attempt to make next week’s finale. But who failed and who impressed? Read on for all the highlights of tonight’s episode!

Tonight on Next Great Baker, the final four contestants kicked off their hunt to the finale with flowers. Yes, for their baker’s challenge this week, Buddy asked the bakers to create the perfect rose, for a chance to win an edible printer – no it was not really edible, but instead it creates edible images to use in baking. Ironically, Nadine, who usually rocks out these types of challenges made the worst looking rose tonight. Meanwhile, Chad did an okay job, but it was Ryan and Marissa who rocked the rose challenge tonight. Buddy decided that Ryan had the best rose, and he was deemed the winner of the challenge.

For the elimination challenge, Buddy brought in 2011 Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, and then instructed the final four to create their best cake celebrating Alyssa’s life. While the bakers listened to Alyssa talk about her interests for ideas for the cake, Buddy made it perfectly clear that he did not want a pageant cake. If only all of the bakers listened – Chad immediately went crazy and decided that he was doing a “bling” cake. The other three contestants decided to take various aspects of Alyssa’s life and incorporate them in the cake.

Just as the contestants were struggling with their time, Buddy came in and announced that in the real bakery, people change their minds all the time, and he reduced the contestants time by 2 hours. Frazzled, the contestants were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Buddy brought in some past contestants to help them. Melo, Jasmine, Heather M., and Wesley came back to lend a hand. It was nice to see them even if it was briefly, and they were definitely put to work.

When it was time to judge the cakes, some of them were up to par, and others were not. Chad’s cake was gorgeous, it had tears of pink satin, ribbons and tons of jewels. It was definitely a “bling” cake, but seemed more fit for a wedding or sweet 16 than for Miss USA. Meanwhile, Marissa impressed this week with a beautiful, clean, cake that incorporated all of Alyssa’s life journeys, including everything from her love of Italian good to the fact that she was from New Jersey. Ryan had the same idea as Marissa, but his cake was very bland looking – definitely not enough details. Nadine, focused her cake on Alyssa’s love of travel, but her cake was tiny compared to the others.

Miss USA loved them all in their own way, but it was Marissa’s cake that really struck her. Buddy told both Marissa and Nadine that they were heading to the finale. With only Chad and Ryan left, Buddy had a tough decision. In the end, Buddy chose to send Ryan to the finale, and Chad to the box truck. I guess Chad should have listened a bit better…what a shame, because his cake was gorgeous!
