Big Brother 13 started strong, with ratings that were higher than last summer’s debut, but while the show continues to win its timeslot during the slow summer months, about 1 million viewers have fled the show, perhaps to avoid hearing Rachel’s laugh. But the show easily beat Mark Burnett’s Expedition Impossible , which hit a series low in its ratings Thursday. While 7.71 million viewers watched Big Brother’s July 7 debut, an a 5 percent increase from last summer’s debut, only 6.73 million watched Cassi’s exit Thursday night, according to a CBS press release , which notes that “was the night’s top program in viewers and key demographics, posting across-the-board increases from last week.” That was down from 7.02 million people on Wednesday, but up from the previous live episode, which only had 6.48 million viewers . There were two possibilities for ABC’s Expedition Impossible , the Mark Burnett-produced adventure race which debuted last night on ABC. The first was that it’d be a game-changing new show, which is what I thought it could be when it was announced . The second was that it’d be an Amazing Race knock-off that either improved on the CBS series or was a pale imitation. After one episode, Expedition Impossible is decidedly the second, but it’s both an improvement and a pale imitation at the same time. It shares a lot of its DNA with Amazing Race. There was a lot that used template directly, with only minor changes (stages instead of legs, “You are the winners of stage one” instead of “You are the first team to arrive”) that just highlighted the similarities. Burnett would like to insist that “this isn’t The Amazing Race,” but it owes a lot to that series. No comments Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has warned fans that the start of the upcoming sixth series will be very ‘dark.’ The writer and producer told Digital Spy that the two opening episodes ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ and ‘Day of the Moon’ will both be “darker than any other opener of a season”. “We’ve been pretty dark before in Doctor Who,” he revealed, adding: “But we’re coming in [to a series] from the dark side just because we haven’t done it that way before.” However, don’t stop your kids tuning in. Moffat promises the show will still be suitable for it’s younger fans. He added: “First of all, you make Doctor Who frightening to appeal to children. Is it possible that the Associated Press has no knowledge of Animal Planet’s outstanding reality series Whale Wars , which documents the Southern Ocean battles between Sea Shepherd conservationists and Japanese whalers? It certainly seems like that, because in a story about Sea Shepherd finding the whaling fleet —before they were able to start whaling—the AP’s Kristen Gelineau writes, “Every year, Japan and Sea Shepherd make claims of aggression against each other, but the accounts are generally impossible to verify.” Impossible to verify? The series, which is not mentioned at all in the article, makes it very possible to see exactly what happens during many of those confrontations. ABC has announced a new Mark Burnett-produced competition series that will air next summer, and it sounds like a combination of The Amazing Race, Survivor, and The Mole, and thus sounds awesome. It’s also great to see a network embrace a non-studio series, and The Bachelor vacations don’t count. On Expedition Impossible , “teams of three will solve problems while racing across deserts, over mountains and through rivers,” according to ABC, which calls this “the next evolution in high adventure and human drama.” There’s no information about the prize, just that the race will involve 10 legs, and be filmed in April. The series is now casting “dynamic, competitive, and energetic teams.” The series is also executive produced by Lisa Hennessy, who has executive produced Great American Road Trip , The Contender, Pirate Master , and Rock Star .
