So You Think You Can Dance will return for a ninth season next summer, but it will only air one episode every week, as Fox has cancelled the results show episodes. Executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe announced that on Twitter, writing, “FOX have cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY.” That seems to suggest the show was at risk of cancellation, and this served as a compromise, but there have been no further details. Nigel also tweeted , “Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrilled we have a new series. So You Think You Can Dance eighth season runner-up Sasha Mallory is an out lesbian, but didn’t reveal her sexual orientation on the show, and her rationale is disturbingly close to Nigel Lythgoe’s moronic and homophobic arguments about why no one ever comes out on his shows, which is far more glaring than competitions series where gay contestants are out. Instead, they use the word “actuality” because “bullshit” wouldn’t work so well as a tagline. While the network has aired real, truthful reality series like Black Gold , which is produced by Deadliest Catch creator Thom Beers, some of its shows are just fiction masquerading as reality, such as Operation Repo , which has actors acting out scripted stories, even if they are “based on real events.” That’s not reality TV, but because it’s framed as a reality show, it draws viewers who think the stories involve real people and have real consequence. The actress had played Viv Hope in the ITV1 soap for 18 years and was hoping she would be awarded a huge dramatic exit. However she ended up being “disappointed” with her final scenes, which saw her alter-ego falling asleep on the sofa and dying in a fire. She said: “I was very disappointed with my departure. And I think the viewers will be, too. As expected, choreographer Mary Murphy will return after a season-long absence to So You Think You Can Dance , replacing Mia Michaels, who quit and won’t be a judge on its eighth season. In a press release, Nigel Lythgoe said, “I am delighted to have Mary back on the show. Her expertise in dance, coupled with her warmth, compassion and humor, make her an excellent judge and fun to work with.” That “warmth, compassion and humor” is a nice contrast to judges Adam Shankman and Mia Michaels, who were pretty much the opposite of those three things, though it’s not quite clear why Nigel didn’t ask Mary Murphy to even choreograph last season if he’s so fond of her.
