(The other half profiled Vicki, a hoarder who essentially rejected the help that she desperately needs; her conflict with the crew and her family made Randy and Matt Paxton’s conflict seem inconsequential.) The episode filmed over the weekend of March 25, and I was there for two full days and part of the final day to write about the show for Playboy . The article covers a lot of the behind-the-scenes interaction, and some of what happened on camera, including Randy and Matt’s fight, which lasted more than 25 minutes in real life—longer than Randy’s story took to play out during the episode. And its weak reality competition Your OWN Show has actually lost viewers. The network’s CEO, Christina Norman, told Broadcasting and Cable that the competition has “been declining. So that’s disappointing to us. We believe in that show we think it’s fun and it was a great way for us to showcase the audience in a different way but maybe they don’t want competition reality from us.” I hope she doesn’t make a sweeping judgment like that from a single series; perhaps try airing a competently produced competition series first, and see what happens then. Norman told the AP that while the show “hasn’t really found its audience, and that’s kind of a drag,” it will still give a show to one of its highly unlikeable cast members. “Somebody’s going to win, and somebody’s life is really going to change,” Norman said. Instead, Jill and Thomas, Brook and Claire, and Nat and Kat are racing for $1 million next Sunday, when Phil Keoghan teased that he’d have an “exciting announcement about next season of The Amazing Race,” but we already know that it’s this or this —or both. Along with others, I assumed there would be an equalizer, probably a flight, that would erase the consequence for Nick quitting. Tonight, a six-part reality series on PBS explores circus life as goes behind the scenes of the Big Apple Circus, a one-ring, European-style circus. The series, called simply Circus , was created by the same people who produced last year’s Carrier , which took cameras on board an aircraft carrier. The series finds its cast members in transition, from the retirement of its founding artistic director to the hot gay twin juggler who’s ending their act by heading off to medical school while his brother stays behind. It’s simultaneously an overview of circus life today and a more intimate portrait of its cast members, though a different kind of intimacy than, say, Bravo’s unscripted series offer. The pace is slower than a typical reality show, but that’s part of its charm, and the first hour tonight builds to a pretty dramatic series of events.
