Harry Connick, Jr., was asked to be an American Idol judge

Popular American Idol mentor Harry Connick, Jr., was asked to be one of the new judges for the show’s 10th season, but said that talks “fizzled out,” though he didn’t say why. That freed him up to do Dolphin Tale, a movie about a boy who befriends a dolphin with an artificial tail.

Talking to TV critics last night—after charming the pants off of us with a performance to promote his upcoming Great Performances special on PBS that includes footage of his recent Broadway run—he said that he would have liked to become a permanent judge.

“They asked me if I was interested in doing it, and I was interested. It was just I had a blast on the show,” he said. “I just thought it was fun talking to these young people about singing and stuff. We had some preliminary conversations, and it just kind of fizzled out, you know, which is fine. I mean, had it materialized, it would have been a fun thing to do. But fortunately, I’ve got some other things going, and that was fine.”
