With New Year’s Day all highlighted in our planners as the premier of the third series of Sherlock, the BBC has announced that a mini prequel episode will be made available on Christmas Day!
The episode, entitled Many Happy Returns, will be available to BBC viewers via the red button service between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when Sherlock Series 3 gets its debut.
Not much is known about the episode at this time, although the official synopsis reads:
“Sherlock Holmes has been gone for two years. But someone isn’t quite convinced that he’s dead…”
Sherlock Series 3, which has been greatly anticipated for the best part of two years, is set to return on January 1st with its two main stars, Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as Watson, and follows on from the series 2 cliff-hanger which saw Sherlock supposedly jump to his death from a high rise building in order to save his friends’ lives’.
However, at the very end of the episode Sherlock could be seen alive and well in the shadows as John Watson laid flowers on his grave side, sparking a nation-wide debate over how the infamous London detective managed to fake his own death.
The answers, which some believe may involve illusionist Derren Brown after he was spotted on set filming with the cast, will be explained in episode on, The Empty Hearse, which was announced as being planned for broadcast on New Year’s Day by a black hearse parading through the city streets with two wreaths, one saying Sherlock, and the other saying 01.01.14.
Also expected in this new series will be the wedding of Watson to the girl he has fallen in love with during Sherlock’ absence, played by Freeman’s real life partner Mr Selfridge star, Amanda Abbington.
Finally there will be a new arch nemesis for Sherlock to focus his intelligence on in the form of Charles Augustus Magnussen, played by Lars Mikkelsen.
