Downton Abbey Christmas spoilers: Rose is ‘coming out’, Isobel gets an admirer & Daisy gets an unexpected invitation
After recently announcing the commission of series five ITV have finally released some details of this year’s third Christmas special! The new episode will revisit the family and stunning house jumping forward six months since the fourth series came to a close recently. The two hour long episode will air on ITV1 and on Christmas Day at 8.30pm.
The programme will start in the middle of the family’s busy summer season and as part of Rose’s ‘coming out’ she is to be taken to Buckingham Palace for presentation. The family and servants are residing at Grantham House in London for the occasion and also making preparations for their busy social program. Not wanting to miss any of the excitement, Cora’s mother, Martha Levinson travels to England from her base in New York bringing with her, her womanising son Harold, who has only just evaded the arm of the law. Both outspoken and larger-than-life, they make quite an impression amongst certain members of London’s high society, in particular with Lord Aysgarth, who is enthralled by the pair.
Isobel experiences the attentions of a male admirer when the show returns, while Edith has a decision to make over a moral quandary.
Downstairs, Daisy receives a surprise and very unexpected invitation, while Carson arranges a special day trip for the staff. Trouble strikes when the Crawleys get caught up in a large scandal which reaches as far as the British monarchy, and Robert goes to any lengths possible to protect himself, his loved ones and the Royal Family.
The episode was filmed in spectacular locations in London and the south of England including Lancaster House, which was used to depict the interiors of Buckingham Palace when Cora presents Lady Rose to The King and Queen, Goldsmith’s College, as well as the beach at West Wittering in Sussex and Basildon Park in Berkshire, which was used for the interiors of the Crawley’s as yet previously unseen London residence.
Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Penelope Wilton, Phyllis Logan, Lily James, Allen Leech, Brendan Coyle, Samantha Bond, Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt, Lesley Nicol, Sophie McShera, Rob James-Collier, Ed Speleers, Cara Theobold, Kevin Doyle and Raquel Cassidy will all be returning for the special episode this festive season.
Shirley MacLaine will also be back and returning to her role as Martha Levinson, Cora’s mother and also making their comebacks are Daisy Lewis, Patrick Kennedy, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Tim Drewe and Douglas Reith.
Showing up on the ITV period drama for the first time is Paul Giamatti portraying Cora’s playboy Harold Levinson, while James Fox will take on the role of Aysgarth. Poppy Drayton plays his daughter Madeline, Oliver Dimsdale is the Prince of Wales and Guy Williams is playing King George V. Michael Benz will be Harold Levinsons valet, Ethan.
Series 4 of Downton Abbey saw the strongest ever series launch, with 12 million viewers tuning in and an overall 40% audience share, and the series consolidated at 11.8 million across the run. Carnival Films is part of NBCUniversal International Television Production.
Downton Abbey will broadcast at 8.30pm on Christmas Day.
