CASTING CREW REALITY TV

Casting Crew Reality Your Brand and Launch Your Reality TV Career!

Discover your brand and break into reality TV!

Use your brand as your platform to launch your fame. Like products, people have brands too.

The following are keys to help you discover and create your own unique brand.

Know your brand...it starts with your "character type"

Your character type is the foundation of your brand. You can't know your brand without knowing your character type.

Your character type + your unique personality = your brand.

Once you discover your character type, you add your unique personality to create your unique brand.

What's your character type? Give it some thought. We can't be everyone; we each have our own unique role that naturally fits us best. What type of character are you?

We typically have 2-3 character types that can fit us. Find the ONE that fits you best.

Are you the "hero," the "villain" or the "sidekick?"

Are you the "mad scientist," the "nerd" or the "geek?"

Are you the "jock," the "stuntman" or the "athlete?"

Are you the "rebel," the "hippie," the "yogi" or the "provocateur?"

Are you the "artist," the "stuntman," the "entertainer," or the "jester?"

Are you the "boy next door," the party boy," the "bad boy," the "All-American boy," the "country boy" or the "b-boy?"

Are you the "girl next door," the "tomboy," the "riot grrrl," the "princess," the "temptress," the "ingénue," the "fashionista" or the "diva?"

Those are just a few character types. What's yours? Check out this list of common stock characters to see if you find a match. Even more, here's a more comprehensive list of stock characters.

Think you know your character type? Think again.

Ask others for their opinion. Ask friends and family. You may be surprised. They may think differently from what you think (it's easy to get caught up wanting to be a character type you're simply not). Listen to others. Embrace who you are. You're unique for a reason, so embrace your natural character type!

Character type and stock characters? What does this have to do with reality TV? Reality TV producers and casting directors look to cast easy-to-identify characters. Stock character types are immediately recognizable. We understand them the minute we see them. They're familiar. All this helps TV shows, which have about 5 -- 7 seconds before viewers change the channel and surf elsewhere. When casting for new TV shows that are new and unfamiliar to audiences, what's something familiar they can hook onto? A familiar character—otherwise known as a stock character!

You're not a cardboard cutout...show your personality

Remember your simple brand recipe?

Character type + your unique personality = your brand.

Your character type is who you naturally are. Discovering your character type helps you know what role you play best and how to focus on your strengths.

Now it's time to add your personality. Without personality, a character type is just a cardboard cutout: Bland, boring and a seen-it-before. You need to fill out your character with your personality. Your character type gives you the form you take, but your personality provides the style.

Don't overthink it. Just recognize who you are, your unique strengths and don't hold back. Let the full-force of your personality shine through.

Together, your character type and your personality create your brand. And there are three basic things you need to know about "brands," in general:

(1) The best are consistent.

(2) The best stay fresh.

(3) The best can be described in one sentence (if not a word).

How does this apply to you?

Let's adapt the same three "brand truths" to your unique situation:

(1) Be consistent with your character type.

(2) Be surprising, exciting and unexpected while consistent to your character type.

(3) Know who you are.

Number three is most important. You need to be able to describe your brand (character type + personality) in a sentence or less to reality TV casting professionals. When you "know who you are" not only will you be able to tell people who you are quickly, but you'll have a guiding definition to keep you from wandering from your brand.

Discovering your brand is easy...

...don't overthink it. Just be who you naturally are, embrace yourself and let your personality shine!
