With the entire nation chomping at the bit waiting for the new series of Sherlock to return, its main star, Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that we are in for a treat when it finally does.

Filming for the third series of the hit BBC detective series is currently under way having taken a brief break between the first two episodes and the finale, and as info starts dripping through we are more excited than ever to see what is in store.

So far we have been teased endlessly with Sherlock style riddles presented to us to work out the names of the episodes in the series, and by Cumberbatch who pretended to tell us how his character had faked his own death in a distorted video shown at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, before finally a trailer was released at the end of the series 2 finale repeat, showing Sherlock’s return in silhouette form whilst his friends and family still believe he is dead.

And now Cumberbatch has added to the clue pot by his latest revelation!

Discussing how much he has enjoyed returning to the famous Baker Street set, the actor explained to Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s great. The second series was weird. Because it was such a phenomenal success, we were a bit distanced from the routine and the inhabiting of those characters. This season, straight into it, comfortable.

“And [the characters all] immediately fit under our skins. (It’s) really hard work because it wouldn’t be a good show unless we were trying to evolve it and set ourselves new challenges and standards. But I love it. I’m very fond of playing him.”

“You’re in for a treat this series,”

When asked if he could elaborate any more on the treat, he replied:

“Ummmmm…no. Nothing that’s worth my liver or whatever part of my body they’d remove if I said anything.”

Meanwhile the actor, who recently starred in the blockbuster film Star Trek: Into Darkness, has reportedly signed up to star in the new animated movie, The Penguins of Madagascar, alongside John Malkovich.

According to The Wrap.com the two actors have agreed to lend their voices in the Madagascar sequel, the latest DreamWorks project in the hugely popular franchise.

If reports are to be believed then Cumberbatch will play the part of a top-ranking CIA agent whilst Red2 star Malkovich will play the villain in the film, which follows the story of the penguins featured in the original film.

This will not be the first time that Cumberbatch will lend his voice to animation, he has recently filmed the voice, and motion movement, for Smaug the dragon in the new Hobbit film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, although he was rather vocal about the credit he got for the role, as he explained to New York magazine earlier this year:

“It was publicised that I ‘voice’ Smaug, and I thought, ‘F**king hell. My voice, my motions – I worked my a** off to create that dragon!’”

Sherlock is due to return to our screens with its third series later this year, watch the new trailer for it in the clip below:
