It has been revealed that Peter Capaldi is such a fan of Doctor Who that he campaigned to run the official fan club when he was a teenager!
According to Keith Miller, who took over the club in January 1971, Capaldi, who was announced on Sunday as Matt Smith’s replacement on the hit BBC family sci-fi show, was so keen to be part of the show that he has even been quoted in his 2012 book depicting Miller’s time running the club.
In the book, The Official Doctor Who Fan Club: Volume One, Capaldi, who was 14 at the time of his campaign, is mentioned by Miller in the following quotes:
“[Capaldi] haunted my time running the fan club, as he was quite indignant he wasn’t considered for the post,”
Capaldi was also mentioned in other quotes released from Starburst magazine:
“I was given the fan club to take the strain of dealing with the advent of the super-fans like Peter Capaldi… who wanted a running dialogue with the production team.”
This was not Capaldi’s only involvement with the club – he also contributed to a Doctor Who fanzine by writing an article praising the “wonder” and “atmosphere” of the show’s opening titles.
Doctor Who returns this November with a celebratory anniversary episode to mark the shows 50th birthday, starring current Time Lord Matt Smith and his companion Jenna-Louise Coleman and their predecessor’s David Tennant and Billie Piper.
The show will then return on Christmas Day with a special episode which will see Smith regenerate into the 12th Doctor, super-fan Peter Capaldi.
