The Borgias has been officially cancelled by Showtime, following its third run on the network.
The epic saga of The Borgias is set to come to an end, as the dramatic tale of Pope Alexander VI will not be renewed for a fourth season by Showtime.
In a statement, Showtime’s entertainment president, David Nevins said: “It has been an honor to work with the great Neil Jordan and the incomparable Jeremy Irons on The Borgias.
“Neil has written nearly every episode of this series himself. His extraordinary storytelling combined with Jeremy’s fascinating portrayal of the infamous Pope Alexander VI, has made for truly outstanding television that will live on. I look forward to future collaborations”.
Fans’ reaction to the cancellation has been less than complementary for Showtime, with many saying they’re unhappy that the show has been axed.
Series creator Neil Jordan added: “I never thought I would make a cable series and have enjoyed every minute of it. For a variety of reasons we won’t be doing a fourth season, but, ‘The Prince’ [the final episode], when I wrote it and shot it, did seem like the end of a journey for the family.”
“Whatever bonded them as a family dies in this episode, and the center of the drama for me was always the family. I want to thank Showtime and David Nevins for their unstinting support over the last three years, and look forward to working with them in the future.”
The show, which has averaged 2.4 million viewers since the second season has gone on to score no less than 10 Emmy Nominations in the past and has won awards for Best Costume and Best Theme Song.
The Borgias follows the rise of the Borgia family and documents their struggle to maintain their grip on power. It stars Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI with François Arnaud as Cesare, Holliday Grainger as Lucrezia, David Oakes as Juan and Aidan Alexander as Gioffre Borgia. Colm Feore also stars as Cardinal della Rovere.
