Many eyebrows were raised in Hollyoaks when Dr Browning’s new nurse student turned out to not only look like his last one, but even had the same name.
Fans of the award-winning Channel 4 soap will know how Lindsey Butterfield (Sophie Austin) arrived in the village recently as the fiancée of oldest Roscoe brother, Joe (Ayden Callaghan).
Now, very rarely does a soap introduce someone with the same name as a current, or recently departed character so it seems pretty clear that Lindsey’s presence is set to feature heavily in the upcoming storyline which will see her name-sake, Lynsey Nolan (Karen Hassan) return to haunt Dr Browning (Joseph Thompson).
The situation begins when, after tiring of Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) Bridezilla impersonation, Dr Browning gets closer to Lindsey, who worryingly reminds him of the first Lynsey, who incidentally he murdered.
But things turn quite sinister when, after making an unrequited pass at her in a life, Browning’s behaviour turns dangerous as he tries to attack her in much the same way.
Lindsey gets away, however, and according to Sophie Austin the actress who plays her, she isn’t about to tolerate any nonsense!
Speaking to Digital Spy about the situation, Austin revealed:
“Browning is quite charming at first, so I think Lindsey’s main concern at the moment is just wanting to do a good job. Browning is obviously her mentor at the hospital, so she wants to work hard for him and she even sees him as a role model.
“But Lindsey isn’t a stupid character and she doesn’t suffer fools gladly, so as the weeks go on, she becomes slightly more wary of him. She does have to watch out, though, as she doesn’t want to jeopardise her job.”
The actress then went on to describe the attack:
“It’s the week before Mercedes and Doctor Browning’s wedding, so Mercedes has become quite a bride-zilla! Browning is releasing a lot of his pent-up frustration in conversations with Lindsey, because she’s down-to-earth and he finds it easy to talk to her.
“Browning asks Lindsey to come to a lecture that he’s giving, I think partly so that he can show off in front of her! Afterwards, they’re in a lift together and there are some crossed wires between them. The lift stops and Browning goes for Lindsey, in more ways than one! But you’ll have to wait and see what happens after that…”
On the subject of the comparisons made between her character and Lynsey Nolan, she continued:
“Well, when I came to the audition, I was pretty much told the difference between the two characters straight away, and I think that comes across quite well on camera. Being compared to Karen Hassan is amazing because she’s just brilliant. I’ve also been fortunate enough to meet her and we got on really well.
“I’m not too fussed about being compared to somebody else because I think the viewers will hopefully see the difference between the two characters. If I’ve done a good job, I hope that will come across – but being compared to somebody like Karen is certainly not a bad thing!”
Hollyoaks can be seen weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4 / Channel 4 HD – watch some behind the scenes footage of Lynsey Nolan’s murder in the clip below:
