24 Hours in A&E: Nicholas, Tyrell and Amoui are the latest patients to be treated at King’s while consultant Rob talks about his rite of passage
The documentary series focusing on life in King’s College Hospital A&E continues with an episode that focuses on that moment in which boys become men, and passing the baton between the generations.
26 year old Nicholas has been punched in the face after a random attack. His jaw is fractured and dislocated meaning that he can’t close his moth or speak. World-renowned consultant craniofacial surgeon Rob puts Nicholas’ jaw back in place with his ‘magic thumb’
17 year old Tyrell has damaged his big toe playing football. His blackened toe nail needs to be removed and his dad, Adrian, use the opportunity to lecture his son that experiencing pain is what separates men from boys. He also tells him about the importance of knowing his family tree in the same way that he knows about Spanish football.
Ho has brought his 78 year old grandmother Amoui to King’s after finding her collapsed in her flat. Amoui came to Britain during the Vietnam War and she’s been like a mother to Ho, so the thought of losing her is almost too much for Ho to bear.
We also hear from consultant Rob, who was the first person in his family to go to university or even do an A-Level. He recalls his own rite of passage becoming a man, with his father, who left school at thirteen to work in a brick yard in order to support his famiily.
24 Hours in A&E continues tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm
