Downton Abbey Series 4: Allen Leech rules out Lady Mary – Tom Branson romance!

Home > Drama > Downton Abbey Series 4: Allen Leech rules out Lady Mary – Tom Branson romance!

March 12th, 2013 by Anna Howell.

Downton Abbey star, Allen Leech, has closed the lid of speculation over his characters future regarding his recently widowed sister-in-law, Lady Mary.

Fans of the hit ITV period drama will know how Allen’s character, Tom Branson, was left devastated when his wife, Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) died shortly after giving birth to their daughter during last year’s series of the show.

Since then Tom has remained at Downton Abbey, bringing up baby Sybil with the help of his late wife’s family, desperately lonely and lost.

However, when his sister-in-law Mary (Michelle Dockery) found herself in the same position as Tom when her husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens) died during last year’s Christmas special, rumours began circulating that Lady Mary and Tom could find romance together in series 4.

These rumours were fuelled further more by the announcement that Lady Mary was indeed to be cast a new love interest when the award-winning show returns to our screens later this year, but Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson, insists it won’t be him!

Speaking to TV Guide, the actor explained:

“While it would be great for drama, I don’t think it would be right for those two [to get together],

“As much as they respect each other, they come from very different worlds.”

Meanwhile show producers have announced that three new male characters will be joining Downton Abbey for the new series, Julian Ovenden, Tom Cullen and former EastEnders actor, Nigel Harman.

Tom Cullen

It is widely speculated that Tom Cullen has been cast to play Lady Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) new love interest, Lord Anthony Gillingham, and Julian Ovenden has also been cast to play aristocrat Charles Blake.

Also, British acting veteran, Harriet Walter, who recently played Brutus in an all-female production of Julius Caesar, is set to join the cast as Lady Shackleton, an old friend of the Dowager Countess, and Joanna David will play a guest role as the Duchess of Yeovil.

Former EastEnders star, Nigel Harman, who played Dennis Rickman – the murdered step-brother-come-husband of current EastEnder Sharon (Letitia Dean) will play a valet named Green.
