Doctor Who & Sherlock go head to head at National Television Awards – as will Matt Smith & Benedict Cumberbatch!
The National Television Awards will take place later this month and it seems there will be some serious competition in some of the categories this year.
Stars and crew from some of the year’s biggest TV hits and most popular dramas and soaps will be at the 2013 awards ceremony when it takes place at the 02 in London and the leading men from two of the BBC’s most talked about series will be going head to head on the night.
The full list of nominations was released earlier today and it’s been revealed that long running sci fi show Doctor Who and detective drama Sherlock will compete for the title of ‘Best Drama’. The leading men will also engage in a battle, as Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch go head to head in the ‘Best Male’ actor category. Merlin’s Colin Morgan and Ronnie Biggs star Daniel Mays have also been nominated.
Of course there is always the possibility that neither BBC show will win out in their category, as they face stiff competition from period drama Downton Abbey, which has been a huge ratings success over the past twelve months.
Doctor Who could end up scoring a hat trick, as stunning actress Karen Gillan, who left the show in 2012, has been nominated for the ‘Best Actress’ award. She is up against Sheridan Smith for her role in Mrs Biggs, Suranne Jones for Scott And Bailey and Miranda Hart for Call The Midwife.
Ant and Dec are hoping to claim the gong for best entertainment for the 12th consecutive year. The also have some stiff competition and are up against Chatty Man host Alan Carr, Celebrity Juice presenter Keith Lemon and X Factor’s Dermot O’Leary.
The ceremony will take place in just a few weeks time at London’s O2 Arena on January 23 and will air on ITV1 at 7.30pm.
Viewers will be able to vote for the winners of the awards from January 8 at NationalTVAwards.com.
