Next Great Baker Recap: Heavy Metal Brings The Claws Out

Last week on TLC‘s Next Great Baker the contestants tackled a bridezilla, only to find out that it was a prank by Buddy Valastro. Tonight, when a heavy metal cake challenge goes wrong, the claws come out on the ladies team. And  just as the contestants thought they were safe, Buddy sends two bakers home this week. Next Great Baker kicked off tonight as the remaining six contestants were put to a flour challenge for their baker’s challenge. Two at a time, they had to duke it out by moving 50 lb bags of flour from one pallet to another, then they had to accurately measure out 35 lbs of flour on the scale. In the finale part of the challenge, they had to pipe some icing on cupcakes, and whoever finished up the quickest would win the challenge, and some awesome mixers!

Comically, the first two competitors up – the two strong men – Ryan and Melo, had the toughest time moving the bags of flour. Melo was complaining nonstop about his back, while Ryan was huffing and puffing as if he were about to pass out. Ryan made good time, but it was quickly destroyed by Chad, who competed against Megan. Then it was time for Nadine and Marissa, and just when we were certain that Chad had won, Marissa proved everyone wrong and beat Chad’s time by seconds. Marissa won the challenge and the mixers – they were well deserved because she kicked by butt by carrying multiple bags of flour at a time!

When it was time for elimination challenge, Buddy brought out two rock and roll looking buddies of his, only to find out that they were his buddies dressed up for the occasion. Buddy announced that this week, the teams would have a rock and roll challenge: create a heavy metal cake complete with working pyrotechnics. The cakes were in honor of Buddy’s brother in law, Mauro, who was celebrating his birthday – and he expected the cakes to be complete with a big “Happy Birthday Mauro” on them.

This week, Buddy also changed things up a bit and put all the girls on one team, and all the guys on another. But what that a huge mistake? The girls could not seem to get along for more than 5 minutes, and as soon as something went wrong, Marissa and Megan were butting heads – can you say drama queens? And yes, you know that Ryan was loving every minute of it. Meanwhile, the guys had struggles of their own as they dropped a portion of their cake and start over, and led to some disagreements between Melo and Chad.

Meanwhile, as time ran out on Next Great Baker, the girls’ guitar cake topper would not stay on top of the cake, so they struggled to wedge something under it, and hoped that it would stay put for the ride in the truck. For the judging tonight, the cakes were brought to a concert, where Mauro, Buddy, and company were celebrating Mauro’s birthday. The girls cake completely flopped when the guitar fell off in the truck, ripping off part of the cake and the pyrotechnics wiring. The men’s cake was pretty cool, as it was set up like a concert stage with skulls, rockers, and it shot fire for the pyrotechnics.

But the men’s cake was missing one very important element – the birthday wishes to Mauro! That pissed Buddy off, but not as much as the girls disaster of a cake. When it was time for elimination, Buddy announced again that two people would be heading home this week, and those two people were Melo and Megan! Ryan, Chad, Marissa, and Nadine were all safe and would be moving on to the final four!
