As you’re probably aware, an unnamed woman claimed Le Vell – whose real name is Michael Turner – had raped her when she was six years old, however, the Crown Prosecution dismissed the case after it found that there was insufficient evidence to bring before a court.
Nazir Afzal, the chief CPS prosecutor in the North West, said of the case, “I have decided Michael Turner will not face any charges in relation to allegations of an historic sexual assault against a child.
“Following police inquiries I have concluded there is insufficient evidence to put before a court.”
Last night, Michael’s brother-in-law told the paper, “He’s very happy. The family are too. He’s doing OK.”
And a Corrie insider added, “Everyone is over the moon for Michael. He’s a popular bloke here and no one liked seeing him so miserable.
“It’s great that he can now put all this behind him and get on with his life.”
Michael, who’s played the role of Kevin Webster for 27 years, was originally arrested in September of last year, and subsequent bailed pending further inquiries. The bosses of Corrie showed their faith in his innocence by allowing him to return to work on the show while he was officially on police bail.
Several of his co-stars have spoken of their belief in Le Vell’s innocence throughout his ordeal, and yesterday, Kym Marsh – who of course plays Michelle Connor – tweeted, “Fantastic news about Michael Le Vell having all charges dropped!
“I hope they make as much of this news as they did about condemning him.”
Her fiancé, Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas, added, “Michael Le Vell, what a great start to the new year for you, cleared of all charges, never a doubt pal.
“Hope this year brings you happiness.”
A friend of Michael’s said last night, “He’s so relieved. He’s been through hell.”
