This Sunday, December 11th, Channel 4 is airing Japan’s Tsunami: Caught on Camera at 8:15pm, and we have a sneak peek clip for you after the jump.
But first, it was of course on the 11th and 12th of March this year that the world watched horrified as a wall of deadly water wiped out swathes of Northern Japan, creating havoc and death as it surged inland.
In this film, we’ll see never before seen footage of that day, and we’ll hear from one man who recorded the horrific event from inside his car.
Lots more footage – all from amateurs who were on the spot – captures the terror of the earthquake that measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, and the resulting tsunami.
More eyewitnesses will reveal how they escaped, and there will be the harrowing stories of those who did not…
Channel 4 adds, “The eyewitness film captures some apocalyptic images of the wave’s destructive power: Takayuki Saijo only just made it up a hill in time to see the town of Kamaishi destroyed beneath him; Kenichi Murakami had to run for his life, climbing a high-school fire escape while filming the carnage below; and Yu Muroga narrowly escaped death as his car (with its on-board camera) was swept away in the torrential current and then sank.”
Channel 4 Specialist Factual Commissioning Editor, Tanya Shaw, says of the programme, “The most heartfelt accounts of disaster often come from the ordinary survivors, who are increasingly capturing history by creating their own personal video records of the events that changed their lives forever.
“This film is a testament to their courage.”
