Are you prepared for a seriously bonkers episode of Doctor Who? Good, because that’s what’s coming up in The Girl Who Waited, an episode in which Amy gets separated from The Doctor and only Rory can rescue her!
If you saw the teaser video at the end of last week’s Night Terrors, this is the episode that looks like it was conceived in the dark recesses of Tim Burton’s mind. Even if the story itself turns out to be a washout (and we hope it won’t), the art direction is a visual feast, and there’s some surprisingly slick CGI at work too.
The episode’s official synopsis?
After Amy becomes trapped in a quarantine facility for plague victims, Rory must make one of the toughest decisions of his life…
According to some online reports, the facility contains a plague virus which could kill The Doctor within 24 hours, which means he can’t directly intervene. He can, however, “use the TARDIS to smash through time and break in, but then Rory is on his own”.
Rory must find Amy and bring her back to the TARDIS before the alien doctors can administer their medicine. Rory is about to encounter a very different side to his wife. Can he rescue Amy before she is killed by kindness?
Elsewhere, Matt Smith has described The Girl Who Waited as “trippy and psychedelic” while episode writer Tom McCrae (and the official line on the BBC website) calls it a “tearjerker”. Fans of the show will already know that the “girl who waited” was a reference to Amy Pond waiting 14 years between the first and second time she met The Doctor. McRae goes on to praise Karen Gillan’s acting skills in this episode:
It’s a real tear-jerker of an episode and it’s very much focused on Karen. Her acting in it is amazing. I know she’ll break the viewers’ hearts in two when they watch it, it’s so emotional.
The teaser trailer for the episode shows two versions of Amy – one of whom might be significantly older – which might explain the “Girl Who Waited” title. I love how this new episode harks back to an earlier moment in Amy Pond’s life. It also has parallels with The Doctor’s Wife when Rory believed he’d waited years for Amy to rescue him.
