Sally Lindsay, who’s starring in new Sky1 sitcom Mount Pleasant, has revealed that although she hasn’t starred in Coronation Street since 2006, people still relate to her as her Weatherfield character, Shelley Unwin.
During her time on the Street, Sally played out a number of big storylines as Shelley, including the dramatic plotline in which her fiancé Charlie Stubbs (Bill Ward) emotionally and physically abused her until Shelley ditched him at the altar.
While discussing why she left the show, Sally said, “I wanted to get back into comedy and that wasn’t going to happen with Shelley because she’d turned into this very dramatic character…
“Don’t get me wrong, this was fabulous – but I wanted to get back to what I started out for really.”
On the subject of being recognised as Shelley, Sally added, “You are Shelley until you get the next huge part on television.”
And Sally’s hoping that turning point will come with her role in Mount Pleasant, which is set in a cul-de-sac in Manchester.
In it, Sally plays Lisa, an accident prone thirty-something who’s happily married and family-orientated.
Of her new role, Sally said, “I see quite a lot of myself in her. My mum does a lot for me, as Lisa’s does, and I really love my partner [Paul Weller drummer Steve White].
“I don’t think I’m quite as spoilt as Lisa, but my mum would probably disagree…”
Mount Pleasant debuts on Sky1 on Wednesday August 24.
