At the end of the seventh season of Grey’s Anatomy, the future of Derek and Meredith’s marriage seemed to be on shaky ground.
He had discovered that his wife and baby mama had tampered with his Alzheimers clinical trial without telling him and seemed unable to forgive her for breaking his trust.
However, showrunner Shonda Rhimes has confirmed that the duo will get past their troubles and resolve their issues in season eight.
She told TV Guide:
“Everything’s going to work out. I know both Patrick [Dempsey] and Ellen [Pompeo] are excited about the idea of continuing, but that doesn’t mean everything’s going to work.”
The pair will be seen planning to move out of Meredith’s mum’s old house in the first episode and beginning work on their new, dream family home.
Rhimes added:
“We open the [first] episode with Derek working on their dream house, and I would love to have them moving in around the end of the season.”
Speaking about their new adopted daughter, she went on:
“Baby Zola is transformative for Meredith, and what happens will be painful, unexpected and wonderful.”
One other big cliffhanger in the season finale concerned Cristina’s unplanned pregnancy and her insistence on an abortion, despite her husband Owen’s protests. Shonda has confirmed that by the end of the September 22nd première in America, viewers will know whether or not her mind can be changed.
