Your OWN Show: The Oprah Winfrey Network Struggling To Draw Viewers

Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) just selected two finalists to receive their very own show on the network. But according to the New York Times; OWN is struggling to draw viewers.

The Oprah Winfrey Network debuted two months ago, replacing the Discovery Health Channel and according to the New York Times, OWN is attracting fewer viewers than the Discovery Health Channel originally had tuning in.

According to the Nielson Company at any time during February, there had been about 135,000 people watching OWN with only about 45,000 of  those people women, ages 25-54. These current ratings levels are down about 10 percent from the Discovery Health’s levels last year.

Current shows on OWN include: “Our America,” a series of documentaries hosted by Lisa Ling; “Breaking Down the Bars,” which chronicles the journey of a group of women in three different stages of incarceration; “Searching for…,” a documentary series that follows the work of Pam Slaton, a professional investigative genealogist; “Oprah Presents Master Class,” in-depth stories about Diane Sawyer, Jay-Z, Dr. Maya Angelou, Simon Cowell, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Lorne Michaels and Oprah herself; “Ask Oprah’s All-Stars;” “The Gayle King Show;” “Season 25: Oprah Behind The Scenes” and “In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman.”

However, OWN executives say a better indication of the network’s progress can be measured in the fall when they expect more viewers to tune in, for the addition of a Rosie O’Donnell daytime talk show and Oprah’s presence with a new show in primetime.
