The moment the entire nation has been waiting for, when the truth about the baby swap hits Walford, has, as we have already reported, been filmed, but with producers still remaining very tight lipped about the hows and whys.
Until now….
The Daily Star has today reported the circumstances surrounding the discovery, to be screened this Easter, in an emotional and heartfelt episode.
Ronnie Branning (Samantha Womack) is visiting her brother in law, Max (Jake Wood) in the hospital where she gave birth to her son, James, and bumps into the midwife who delivered him, and the guilt becomes too much for the deeply troubled Eastender.
Viewers know that baby James died on New Years eve, and that Ronnie swapped the lifeless tot with Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie’s (Shane Richie) baby Tommy, and has since watched the pair grieve for the loss of a son that she has been raising as her own.
Whilst at the hospital, the enormity of what she has done, and the implications and pain it has caused finally reach her conscience and she decides enough is enough.
Seeing that his wife is looking like she is about to have another meltdown, Jack (Scot Maslen) tries to find out what is troubling her, and to take the baby from her, to which Ronnie reveals that he is not his son, but does not elaborate any further.
With that, Ronnie takes the baby and drives to the Queen Vic, where she then leaves after some time, without the baby.
The details of the confession have not been disclosed, but the Star have revealed that she will confess all to either her sister Roxy Mitchell, the baby’s real dad Michael Moon or Kat and Alfie.
The police are then called and baby Tommy is taken to the hospital to be checked over.
An Albert Square insider told the Daily Star Sunday: “It’s as though Ronnie wakes up from a bad dream.
“Something inside her switches back on and she realises the extent of her actions. As soon as that happens she knows she must confess all about what she’s done and hand back Kat’s baby.
“She then walks out in a complete daze and viewers will be left wondering what has happened to her as she just disappears.
“Kat is finally reunited with her baby as the shocking news sinks in. After all they’ve been through, Kat and Alfie can’t believe what they’re being told. The episode will be a must-see for all fans.”
News of the confession reaches Jack, who has to then cope with losing the son he though was his, as well as accepting what his wife has done and also worrying for her safety.
The insider added: “The storyline has been one of the biggest the soap world has ever seen.
“Yes, it provoked a number of complaints but the writing and acting have been brilliant and there will be a hell of a lot of fans tuning in to watch Kat finally be reunited with her baby.”
Actress Samantha Womack, who plays Ronnie, hit out at the controversial plot and will be leaving in May.
She is currently filming the aftermath of the big episode and fans will have to wait to see whether Ronnie goes to jail for the crime.
One rumour is that she will be treated for her mental state.
An EastEnders spokesman said: “We do not comment on future storylines but we have always said Ronnie will do the right thing and Tommy will be reunited with Kat.”
