‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Sherlock’ will will compete against each other in the Best Drama Series category at this year’s Royal Television Society programme awards.
The ITV1 costume drama – starring Dame Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville – and BBC One’s detective show are up against E4 series ‘Misfits’ in the prestigious category, while ‘This Is England ’86' is up against ‘Any Human Heart’ and ‘Five Daughters’ for Best Drama Serial.
Although ‘Downton Abbey’ was a huge hit with fans, its individual stars missed out on any nominations with Vicky McClure (‘This Is England ’86'), Natalie Press (‘Five Daughters’) and Julie Walters (‘Mo’) battling it out for Best Actress.
Meanwhile, Johnny Harris (‘This Is England ’86') David Tennant (‘Single Father’) and Jim Broadbent (‘Any Human Heart’) are in the running for Best Actor.
‘The Inbetweeners’, ‘Miranda’ and ‘Rev’ are all up for Best Scripted Comedy, while ‘The Million Pound Drop’, ‘The X Factor’ and ‘The Cube’ will battle it out for Best Entertainment.
The awards – which will be hosted by comedian Dara O’Briain – take place at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on March 15.
