At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last night, President Barack Obama repeatedly ripped Donald Trump, referencing events on The Celebrity Apprentice as Trump sat nearby, frowning even through jokes that weren’t about him. Later, Seth Meyers also mocked Trump, although going for predictable jokes, like about his hair.
The dinner came just days after Obama unnecessarily released his long-form birth certificate, ending a stupid non-issue that got more media attention than it deserved because Trump’s Apprentice-damaging political aspirations. The thinly veiled racism behind the birther nonsense, which Trump did nothing to conceal by insisting on a radio show, “I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks,” was even called out by David Letterman, prompting Trump to cancel his appearance on the show.
Anyway, as you can see below, Trump responded to Obama’s jokes by facing forward, his lips pressed tightly together, rocking up and down, as if nodding slightly, although he did not look happy at all, perhaps because the crowd was especially enjoying his destruction.
Here’s what President Obama said about Trump:
“I know that he’s taken some flak lately, but no one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald. And that’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter. Like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac? All kidding aside, we obviously all know about your credentials and breadth of experience. For example, no seriously, just recently, in an episode of Celebrity Apprentice at the steakhouse, the men’s cooking team did not impress the judges from Omaha Steaks. And there was a lot of blame to go around, but you, Mr. Trump, recognized that the real problem was a lack of leadership. And so ultimately, you didn’t blame Lil Jon or Meat Loaf. You fired Gary Busey. These are the kind of decisions that would keep me up at night. Well handled, sir. Well handled. Say what you will about Mr. Trump, he certainly would bring some change to the White House.”
The screen then showed an image of The White House transformed into a Trump casino. I’m not sure if the joke writers intentionally screwed up the details of the challenge (“at the steakhouse,” “men’s cooking team”) to make it seem even more juvenile, but otherwise it was pretty spot on. Trump’s response later proved that he really can’t take a joke. Asked if he liked the humor, he said, “No, not really. Some were fun, but not the greatest.”
