Jewelry Retail – Operating, Merchandising and Marketing

With any business venture, the customer’s trust is a vital component for success. The company’s integrity is considered to be an important part of its capital.

A jewelry retail business depends highly on the customer’s confidence to the company and the product. Because jewelry is valuable, intimidating and difficult for consumers to appraise, a jewelry retail business must provide a very good service and expertise to encourage high amount of purchases. Jewelry retailers who project an image of trustworthiness and reliability are most likely to attract customers and have a regular inflow of buyers.

Jewelry retailers should then be very consistent with their operations. Operations for retailing involves selecting and buying from jewelry manufacturers and jewelry wholesalers, training retail personnel and marketing products through a variety of channels.

Jewelry manufacturers and jewelry wholesalers are an integral part of the jewelry retail business as they are the source of the products. The reliability of a jewelry wholesaler can greatly affect the retailer’s credibility. When consumers buy a substandard product, they will not be blaming the jewelry manufacturer or jewelry wholesaler even if they were the ones who made the merchandise. The jewelry retailer will get all the blame thus it is very important to pick out the best and most trusted wholesalers when it comes to jewelry retailing business.

Training one’s staff is also a very important aspect in the operation of a jewelry retail business. Remember that the customers look for reliable and trustworthy establishments. If the staff appears to be uninformed or inexperienced, the customers will likely go out of the jewelry store as soon as they can.

Also, to further encourage customers to patronize their products, some jewelry retail businesses add other services under their belt which may include jewelry cleaning and repair. Repair services account for ten percent of annual revenues for jewelry retailers.

Marketing and merchandising is probably the most vital part of jewelry retail operations. To have an effect marketing scheme, jewelers must be technically skilled and aware of the latest fashion trends. Classify customers and target specific groups like teens, young professionals, couples and others whenever launching a marketing strategy. Each group has their own style, need and view when purchasing jewelry, thus the marketing strategy for each should be tackled independently.

Operating a jewelry retail business can be a little intimidating at first but as one learn and discover, this venture is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding enterprise there is. With so much to gain, this is probably the thing you have been waiting for. The opportunity is here… the next move is yours.
