American Idol: Austin Auditions!

American Idol on FOX heads to Austin, Texas tonight for more auditions. You’ll have to keep reading however to find out if what Nigel Lythgoe said about the talent level rings true for Austin!

American Idol on FOX kicks off the Austin auditions with some crazy Steven Tyler antics and then we met the first contestant, Corey Levoy. Corey is a 21 year old whose biggest inspiration is his sister, whom he just met due to parental differences and swears they are best friends. For his audition, Corey performed “I can’t make you love me” and the judges brought his sister in to help them judge. He really didn’t need the help though as he earned an easy golden ticket with his voice. Following Casey came Hollie Cavanagh, a 17 year old with big dreams, but did she have a big voice? After her first song, Randy Jackson immediately said no that she was not ready but then Jennifer Lopez asked her if she could compose herself and sing something else as she was crying hysterically. After regaining her composure, Hollie sang a quite powerful version of “The climb” by Miley Cyrus and earned her spot in Hollywood.

Austin would prove to be full of horrible auditions as well, starting with an awkward version of “Circle of life” by Rodolpho Ochoa, in which Randy told him that his audition was “not going the way he was thinking” and his “singing was terrible”. But it didn’t seem like it was getting any better after that as we saw our share of awful cowboys, and just when the judges were ready to give up on cowboys, John Wayne Schulz walked in. John Wayne is a 23 year old rancher – yes a good old fashioned cowboy whose mother inspired him to audition when she was diagnosed with cancer. After he performed his version of “Believe” by Brooks and Dunn, the judges asked him to bring his parents in the room and they gave the family the good news that John Wayne was headed to Hollywood.

Day two of American Idol’s Austin auditions started off on a strange note as we met Courtney Penry, a 17 year old who was obsessed with Ryan Seacrest. After swearing that she was going to marry him someday, Courtney was shaken up when she actually met Ryan and he couldn’t seem to understand or believe that she was so in awe of him. When it was time for her audition, Courtney kicked it off by giving the judges a quick comedic chicken impression which left Randy wondering if he was in the right audition room. Finally, Courtney performed “stay” by Sugarland and it was actually quite despite what I assumed it would sound like. Steven saw her star quality and both Randy and Jennifer told her she needed to work out a few voice issues, but they gave her a golden ticket anyway – how lucky for Ryan Seacrest!

Next we saw a few more quick golden tickets with Shauntell Campos, Aaron Carr, and rocker Caleb Johnson. Following the winning streak Austin, we met Jacqueline Dunford and Nick Fink, a pair of teenage lovers who were aiming to be the first American Idol “power couple” as they claimed. Although they were both cute and looked good together, I was expecting this audition to be a disaster and was pleasantly surprised that it was not. Jacqueline performed first and her version of “Mercy” had the judges, but more so Nick in awe of her. Nick quickly performed and then the judges asked that they both come up on stage where they were told that together they were Hollywood bound.

As the day wound down, we met Janelle Arthur, a 20 year old real down home southern girl. After her performance though, Steven asked her to sing again in another tempo and she blew them away. Needless to say Janelle earned herself a golden ticket. Before we could get to the final performance of the night, we saw a slew of awful and idiotic performances including one woman dressed as an armadillo – seriously, who comes to an audition like that and expects to be taken seriously? Randy finally had enough and started showing it and telling it to the awful hopefuls. Then we met Casey Abrams, who someone said looked like Fraggle Rock. Despite his looks, Casey came in and sang “Don’t need no doctor” and he rocked it! So much so that the future rocker earned his way straight to Hollywood and ended the auditions in Austin on a very positive note!
