Project Runway is down to the final five! Oh, they grow up so fast on the Lifetime hit show, don’t they? The show kicks off with a bang, when Tim tells the final five to meet Heidi Klum on the runway, where she tells them to take night off and relax. They’re sent to a fancy hotel and pop some champagne. But will they have time to enjoy it? Read on to find out!
The Project Runway final five pile into the presidential suite at a fancy New York hotel, where Gretchen makes a toast and the remaining designers reflect upon the past few weeks. Though some suspected it might be a trap, as Heidi Klum never gives them a chance to relax, they actually get to spend the evening together without the pressures of the competition.
The next day, though, it’s go time. The fully rested designers meet Tim on a roof where they meet Mayor Bloomberg. Like he has nothing better to do? Seriously?
He tells them the challenge: design a look inspired by New York City itself. And make it work. This is the last challenge before fashion week. They got the biggest budget thus far, a whopping $500. What will inspire them?
Michael goes to the Statue of Liberty seeking inspiration, April and Mondo head to the Brooklyn Bridge. Andy chooses Central Park for his last challenge while Gretchen heads south to the Lower East Side.
They then all meet back at Mood, pick fabric and head back to Parsons and get to work.
Michael struggles early. Mondo gets tired and takes a nap – for two hours!! He finally wakes up and gets worried he might not make it through. Andy gives birth to what he calls a “Chinese prostitute” style dress. Things are definitely looking grim.
Everyone is stressed out at the end of day one and day two is no better.
Tim comes in to check in. He approves of Mondo, tells April to edit, edit, edit. Then he calls Michael’s piece a tortured mess and tells Andy not make his dress look slutty like a Real Housewife of New Jersey. Oh snap! Finally, Tim warns Gretchen not to build for her, but for her customer. He then sends in the models for a fitting where they consult with hair and makeup. Mondo has nothing put together for his model, though. Will he finish in time?
Runway day arrives and we meet the judges, whom we already know so well. The special guest judge for the day is former Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.
As the models strut their stuff, we finally get to see what the top five have been working on for two days.
Nina liked Mondo’s dress, but Heidi was bored. Everyone liked Andy’s dress, and nobody liked Gretchen’s outfit. Which made her cry. Michael hated April’s – calling her outfits joyless. Next up, Michael. Who feared the whole time that he wouldn’t make it work – made it work. The judges loved his design.
Next, the designers had to tell the judges who they would take with them to fashion week. The judges then deliberated and brought out the designers to seal their fate.
Michael makes the cut after he wowed the judges with his Statue of Liberty inspired dress. Of course Mondo gets picked, as does Andy.
Now, only the ladies remained. The judges critiqued April about her lack of vision and Gretchen on how she lost her way. In the end, April was OUT, leaving her shocked and the other designers saddened.
The final four will now have time to create their collection, but only three will be going to Bryant Park.
