Why are Eastender’s still winning everything?
Don’t get me wrong, Eastenders still do have enjoyable and dramatic story lines, but am I the only one who has noticed this should not be a one horse race anymore?
There was a time, a few years back when the likes of Holyoaks started to stand up and be noticed at the award ceremonies, why haven’t we learned from that that every vote does count.
Corronation Street celebrated it’s 50th anniversary with the amazing tram crash including one hour long episode shown live. Eastenders live episode was good, that is not in dispute, but at 25 minutes it had an entire 5 minute filler scene where Ian (Adam Woodyatt) and Dot (June Brown) sat watching the television, not to mention the very first scene being messed up by Jack (Scot Maslen) forgetting his lines and actually mentioning the audience. In contrast Corronation Street went, as far as I could tell, without a hitch, incorporated at least twice as many scene changes and ran for more than double the time. Instead of focussing on a duff-duff, the episode managed to capture the emotions of pretty much every street character, and some of the acting was out of this world, in particular Fiz (Jenny McAlpine) giving birth and Lianne (Jane Dawson) at Peter’s bedside.
And how could an article like this finish without mentioning Emmerdale? Although not partaking in such dramatics as a live episode to celebrate it’s 35th anniversary, it still maintained its quiet dignity with a less commercial celebrative story line (involving … you guessed it, fire), the story lines we have seen develop over the last year have been well thought and very committed, with acting ability shining through, in particular those of Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller) and the previous year Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), the former making me think we have a British actor who will go on to really great things (the scene where Clyde is put down still brings a lump to my throat just thinking about it).
All in all, we, as a nation, are incredibly lucky to be entertained regularly by these iconic, brilliant shows, but I implore you, people of Great Britain, to use your vote to recognise them all, how will they know we love them and that they are doing things right if we don’t give them a bit of bling?
