Chef Gordon Ramsay is back tonight for a brand new episode of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX. This week, he heads to West Babylon, NY to try and save the Classic American Restaurant. But with nearly $1 million dollars of debt and too much leniency from the owners, will he be able to get this place back on track or will they be forced to shut their doors? Keep reading to find out!
Kitchen Nightmares kicks off week two as Gordon Ramsay makes his way to Classic American Restaurant in West Babylon NY. The restaurant’s owners Colleen and Naomi, have owned and run the restaurant for the past 10 years after purchasing it from the original owner who they worked for as waitresses. Both ladies felt that since they had worked their so long and knew all the customers they could make it a success for them. In the early years the place was packed constantly and now their customers are dwindling to just a mere few per night, so what is going on? Leave that to Gordon Ramsay to find out!
When Chef Ramsay arrives and tries to get to the bottom of the issues, Colleen closes up and won’t talk to him – instead she pushes him off by telling him there are many issues. Instead of trying to get it out of them, Gordon decides he will try the menu instead. He ordered a salad, calamari, macaroni and cheese and their special “bomb” burger which is supposedly a customer favorite, and he is mortified at what he finds when the good arrives at the table. His calamari is like rubber, the macaroni and cheese almost made him sick and the burger was chewy and not fresh tasting at all. After grilling the waitress for answers, he found out that the calamari, as well as most of their food was frozen and not fresh and the macaroni was boxed, but they tried to justify it by saying the kids like it.
Upon further inspection and a dinner service at Classic American Restaurant on Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsay starts to figure out why this place is failing and in so much debt. They are not stocked or supplied well enough to feed any customers, let alone a full dining room. With only 13 menus and 50 seats, employees who spend more time texting on their cell phones than serving customers and too much leniency from Colleen and Naomi it’s no wonder the only successful recipe they have is one for disaster. Gordon also learns that Colleen is too attached to everyone and treats them all like family instead of employees, when in fact the only family member working there is her son, who is the head chef. Colleen’s boyfriend Dominick also works there but he seems to spend too much time angry and yelling and not enough time stocking food which is what he should be doing.
The next morning Gordon gathers the group of employees along with Naomi and Colleen and asks them all to write down one reason why they think the restaurant is failing and put it in a bucket for him to read aloud. This draws a lot of anger and hard feelings, but it needs to be done in order for them all to realize how they are jeopardizing the business. The first one if for the waitresses, who admit to smoking and texting instead of serving the customers. Then one is for Dom and his lack of responsibility on ordering food and supplies, which he tries to pass off on to someone else and Colleen cuts him and tells him that it is his responsibility. Gordon and Colleen then have a private heart to heart conversation in which she tells him how emotionally invested she is in the restaurant and he reassures her and advises her that she needs to take the reigns to get things back on track.
Next, Gordon decided to try some new menu items with the staff and then they have another dinner service, with newly appointed duties – Colleen in the kitchen with her son Kevin and Naomi on the floor with the waitresses. Almost immediately Gordon catches the waitresses outside smoking and Colleen has a nervous break down. Food is still scarce are they are having trouble sending things out. Finally, Gordon has had enough and tells them they need to shut the place down for good if they are not going to get serious, and they need to close the place down for the evening since the food was dwindling down, despite the rave reviews his new items were getting. Naomi has to do the hardest thing she has ever had to do and tell a fully packed dining room that they were shutting down and they all needed to leave.
The next morning on Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon surprises the staff with a newly decorated and renovated restaurant, complete with a new exterior so it stands it out. He then takes them instead and show them their new menu items which have dropped drastically from the 70 plus items that were on their original menu. He also surprises them with brand new menus, dishes, glasses, silverware and supplies to cover the entire dining room if they get a full house. He then gives them the instructions on how to successfully run the place like they had started to do the prior night until the food ran out. The recipe for success Gordon gave Colleen and Naomi has proven to be a success for them and Classic American as the restaurant is doing better than ever to date!
