Having my Mom come and stay with me and Cooper in Los Angeles sounded like a dream come true. Well, maybe “dream” isn’t the exact technical term I’m looking for. What’s that other psychic phenomenon that takes place in your mind while you’re sleeping? Oh, yeah…nightmare. Then again, how bad could it be?

She said she’d only be here for a week or two. Plus, it’s not as if my Mother has ever tried to run my life or anything, other than from the exact instant she gave birth to me up until this very second. But like I always say, when life gives you lemons fill up a burlap bag with them and use it to beat people because it doesn’t leave a mark– or something like that, I forget!

Anyhoo, what I was really looking forward to was being able to say to my Mom, “As long as you live under my roof, you live by my rules.”Yes, looking back over my teen-aged years I knew that part was going to be sweet, very sweet. But there was one thing I was worried about. I had been keeping a little something a secret from my Mom — or maybe I should say a big something — and if she came to stay with us I knew that she’d probably find out about it sooner or later. So I decided to tell her about it, but in my own time. Good thing Mom’s not nosy…

Butter two 8?, 9? or 10? round cake pans, line the bottoms with greaseproof paper, butter again, and dust with flour, tapping out the excess.
