Coronation Street bosses plan to show Gary Windass’s battle with post-traumatic stress using short video diaries.
The drama features Gary’s video diaries from his time on duty in Afghanistan and in an interview with The Sun’s Buzz magazine, actor Mikey North admitted that most of the scenes were shot in a quarry in Bolton. He said:
“We actually filmed the show in a quarry in Bolton! We were supposed to be acting like it was 40-degree heat, but it was so cold that I felt as if my toes were going to fall off. It was filmed on a small budget, but the end result is amazing.”
On why he thinks it’s important for viewers to find out what happened to Gary during his time on the frontline, North added:
“It’s very important. This show really fills the gaps and gives an insight into why Gary became so depressed after his best mate and fellow soldier Quinny is killed.”
In one scene Gary loses a game of pool and has to strip off. So how did he feel about getting naked?
“I wouldn’t wish my body on my worst enemy, but it was all good fun. The director knows I hate losing at pool in real life – that’s why he wrote it into the script.”
But Mikey wouldn’t consider joining the army himself – he’s not brave enough. He confessed:
“No, I’m not brave enough. I’ve got massive respect for our troops – even more so since doing this storyline.”
