Last night on FOX‘s American Idol we said goodbye to both Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo. In a post elimination press conference, both of these ladies shared how they feel the women are at a disadvantage on the show as well as other thoughts on their experiences. Keep reading for more details!
American Idol’s Thia Megia was first up for the press conference today and here is what our youngest finalist wanted to share with her fans and viewers.
Question: Were you surprised by your elimination last night?
Thia Megia: Actually I really didn’t know what to expect since there are a lot of great singers in the competition. I had a mixture of emotions when I was on stage, I wanted this so bad, but everyone else is so incredible. I didn’t know what to feel to be honest.
Question: What was it like being pulled away from the other contestants to do your schooling?
Thia Megia: We did 3-4 hours of school a day, I feel that we didn’t get that much rehearsal time. The advantage, being minors, it was an escape from all the stress for us. It was cool to actually have that time to bond with the other minors.
Question: What did you enjoy the most about the competition?
Thia Megia: I enjoyed every bit of the competition. That is what made it hard to say goodbye last night. It’s not the end of the competition, we are all going to see each other in a couple weeks anyway. I am going to miss the vocal coaches and what they taught us.
Question: With all the girls going home earlier on the past few seasons, were the girls concerned this season?
Thia Megia: We figured since there are more females watching the show, they are going to be rooting for the guys.
Question: How many national anthem performances have you done and do you ever get nervous?
Thia Megia: I lost count of how many national anthem performances I have done. I get nervous every time for every single performance. Once I am up there, I am taken in by the music and the moment. I go from extremely nervous to show mode.
Question: Do you wish you had taken the less “safe” road and done more upbeat songs versus so many ballads?
Thia Megia: I guess for the previos weeks I did ballads, I regret not choosing more upbeat songs, but for the last one I don’t regret, I dedicated that to my brother and I put all my emotions in to that one.
Next up was Naima Adedapo for some questions and answers, and Naima wanted to share this with her fans and viewers.
Question: Were you concerned about the girls’ fate since so many ladies have been eliminated early on in past seasons and this one started off the same?
Naima Adedapo: We weren’t really concerned because we all had faith in ourselves. But more than 50 percent of the audience are little teenage girls and once they get a crush, we go down, they dominate. That is just the reality of the situation.
Question: Can you give us some insight to your dance background?
Naima Adedapo: I have been part of many dance troupes actually. I used to do hip-hop, but for most part it’s been African dance. Any African dance company that you name in Milwaukee, I’ve been a part of. Dancing has always been a part of my life, since I was young, just playing around on the streets in Chicago. I did go to college and study dance, I got a BFA in dance, so I know all different forms of dance. My husband and I have a reggae band back home and we always dance on stage, it’s a natural for us. You have to dance, you have to move, you have to physically be engaged in order to fully connect with the audience.
Question: Lauren looked heartbroken last night, how close were you all?
Naima Adedapo: Lauren was so upset, she cried out a little bit, but that’s the natural thing to do, its alright. It was very hard for her, because I’ve been like a mother figure to her, even more so it was because of Thia because that was like her ace, they were in school together all the time, they were really close and tight. I had my moment when I had to say ‘see you later’ to Jacob, he was my ace.
Question: What was your favorite part of the experience?
Naima Adedapo: Shopping. I think that was like one of the biggest, best parts for me. Performing is everything, but when you get to shop and you get to do the accessories and the shoes, I get such a kick out of that and that was my release time. It was great to kind of co-create things with the stylist – she knew my style. She would have stuff hanging on the rack before we even went shopping.
Question: Can you tell us about your unique style that you brought to the show?
Naima Adedapo: To me, I’m really about staying true to myself. Once I have my mind set on something, I just kind of go out there and do it. I did what I did and I have no regrets about anything I’ve done on the show and I’m happy to have shown that side of me. I think sometimes people just didn’t know where to place me. I felt like maybe they didn’t understand me sometimes, but honestly, the reactions that I’ve gotten from people have still been positive. I definitely struck people in a different kind of way.
